Job Description
High Tech High is a pioneering network of charter schools located in San Diego, California. Established in September 2000 by a coalition of civic leaders and educators, it began as a small project-based public charter school designed to serve approximately 450 students. Over the years, High Tech High has expanded and now encompasses fourteen charter schools that serve roughly 6,200 students from kindergarten through 12th grade across multiple campuses, including Point Loma, Clairemont, North County, and Chula Vista. The organization not only focuses on K-12 education but also offers adult learning environments such as a Teacher Credentialing Program and the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, which provides professional development opportunities to educators nationally and internationally. High Tech High is committed to fostering innovative educational practices and supporting the growth of teaching professionals who are dedicated to project-based learning and inclusive education.
The role offered is for a full-time Day Porter who reports directly to the Facilities Manager within the High Tech High organization. This position is classified as non-exempt and is part of the Classified Union with a salary range from $25.59 to $29.00 per hour, commensurate with experience. The Day Porter position primarily focuses on maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the school environment by managing common areas of the school buildings to ensure a safe and pleasant setting for all K-12 students. Responsibilities include assisting maintenance technicians with various projects and custodians with cleaning duties upon request, as well as performing landscaping tasks depending on the specific campus.
This hands-on role requires a proactive approach to facility management duties such as emptying trash and recycling receptacles multiple times a day, cleaning up exterior debris, power washing walkways and lunch tables, using blowers to clear debris, and handling graffiti removal and emergency clean-up tasks. The Day Porter will also support logistic operations by unloading delivery trucks and facilitating event setups by moving tables, chairs, and stage components. The position demands physical stamina as it involves frequent standing, walking, lifting, climbing ladders, and operating various cleaning machines including floor scrubbers and steam cleaners. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions, maintain regular attendance, and work cooperatively with the facilities team. High Tech High emphasizes inclusivity and equal employment opportunity, ensuring that all qualified applicants shall receive consideration without discrimination under any protected classifications. Additionally, hired individuals must pass a background check, including TB clearance and criminal justice fingerprint/background clearance, in compliance with the school district's safety protocols. This position offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for full-time employees and their dependents, as well as pension benefits through CalPERS Retirement. High Tech High also embraces modern technology by integrating AI tools in their hiring process to enhance efficiency while retaining human decision-making for final employment choices.
