Job Description

St. Catherine of Siena Church is a respected Roman Catholic parish dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of its community while maintaining an inviting and clean environment for parishioners and visitors. Located in a welcoming neighborhood, St. Catherine of Siena not only provides regular worship services but also serves as a hub for community events, meetings, and outreach programs. The church campus includes the main church building, an administration building, and the rectory, each requiring diligent upkeep to ensure safety, cleanliness, and a respectful atmosphere consistent with the church's mission and values. As an established institution, St. Catherine of Siena Church values its employees as representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and expects all staff to embody its goals and mission in their daily work.

The role of the Day Porter at St. Catherine of Siena Church is essential in maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, and overall order of the church campus facilities. This part-time, non-exempt position reports directly to the Facilities Manager and operates on a schedule of Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The pay range for this position is $17.00 to $21.00 per hour, reflecting the importance of the responsibilities entrusted to the Day Porter. The role involves a comprehensive set of cleaning and maintenance duties that cover multiple areas including the church itself, the administration building, the rectory, and surrounding outdoor grounds.

Day Porters are responsible for ensuring that all office spaces, bathrooms, the priests' house, building entrances, and communal gathering spaces are immaculate and well-organized. This includes routine cleaning tasks such as wiping down and vacuuming pews and chairs, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, wiping baseboards and windowsills, and maintaining a deep clean on a weekly basis. Additionally, the Day Porter interacts with cleaning equipment like mops, brooms, and dusters, and performs tasks such as replacing light fixtures, cleaning carpets and upholstery, and moving boxes or supplies as needed.

Beyond indoor duties, this position includes outdoor responsibilities such as sweeping decks and patios, emptying exterior trash cans, watering plants, and ensuring trash and recycle bins are properly set out for weekly pickup. The Day Porter must be proactive in identifying areas that need attention, maintaining cleaning and paper product inventories, and communicating maintenance or safety concerns to the Facilities Manager promptly. They also play an important role in supporting event setups by arranging meeting rooms and patios for various functions.

This role requires an individual who is detail-oriented, able to work independently with a proactive attitude, and who can respond well to last-minute schedule changes or urgent requests. Since the Day Porter represents the church community, a commitment to the values and mission of the Catholic Church, along with a strict standard of confidentiality and ethics, is necessary. Familiarity or comfort working within a church environment is also important, as is the ability to communicate effectively with staff, clergy, and parishioners. The physical demands of the job include regular standing, walking, lifting items up to 30 pounds, using ladders, and performing cleaning tasks that require close vision and manual dexterity.

Overall, this position offers a unique opportunity for individuals who take pride in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments in a faith-based setting, while working part-time with a supportive Facilities team at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
