The Database Support Engineer role at Belcan provides advanced operational support and maintenance for enterprise-level database systems including Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and various NoSQL platforms. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the high availability, performance, and stability of the company's database environments by handling complex incidents and performing deep-dive troubleshooting and analysis. The engineer will collaborate closely with Level 3 and Engineering teams, facilitating smooth resolution of issues and implementation of changes to optimize database performance.
The role involves monitoring database health and performance metrics, managing scheduled jobs such as backups and maintenance plans, and responding to alerts using predefined runbooks. The incumbent will diagnose and resolve common database issues, validate backup success, and coordinate with infrastructure teams to address storage concerns. Further responsibilities include managing user access aligned with security protocols, assisting users with permissions and connectivity issues, and executing patching and maintenance activities as required.
Documentation management is a key facet of this role, encompassing the upkeep of standard operating procedures, knowledge base articles, and IT service management records. The Database Support Engineer is also responsible for participating in operational reviews and cross-functional collaboration with Application, Infrastructure, Service Desk, and Security teams to ensure comprehensive incident response and sustained database reliability.
This on-site position is based in Des Moines, IA, and offers a competitive salary range between $95,000 and $105,000 annually. Job Requirements
- Basic understanding of database concepts such as tables, indexes, schemas, sessions, locks, backups
- Familiarity with major database platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL (exposure is sufficient at L1)
- Basic SQL knowledge for simple queries, checks, and validations
- Basic Linux/Windows administration for log navigation, service checks, and file operations
- Understanding of monitoring tools such as OEM, SolarWinds, Nagios, Dynatrace
- Knowledge of backup concepts including full, incremental, retention, restore basics
- ITIL process knowledge including Incident, Request, Change
Job Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
Job Duties
- Monitor database health, performance metrics, storage, and capacity alerts
- Track scheduled jobs, including backups, maintenance plans, and ETL tasks, ensuring successful completion
- Respond to alerts from monitoring platforms and perform initial triage based on runbooks
- Diagnose and resolve common issues including connectivity failures, authentication errors, and query performance slowdowns
- Gather, analyze, and document logs and error messages to support troubleshooting
- Process user access requests in accordance with approval workflows
- Create, modify, and remove database accounts in alignment with security standards
- Assist users with permissions, connection issues, and basic troubleshooting
- Perform scheduled operational checks aligned to daily, weekly, and monthly runbooks
- Validate backup success and coordinate with Infrastructure teams regarding storage issues
- Support patching and maintenance activities by coordinating or executing steps as appropriate
- Monitor slow queries, blocking, long-running jobs, and resource contention
- Provide initial performance assessments and escalate for advanced optimization
- Ensure all activities follow audit, compliance, and change control requirements
- Maintain and update SOPs, knowledge base articles, and documentation
- Document troubleshooting steps and updates within the ITSM system
- Collaborate with Application Teams, Infrastructure, Service Desk, and Security during incident response
- Participate in operational review meetings and standups as needed
