Job Description
The hiring organization is a dynamic technology-focused company based in Austin, TX, specializing in delivering innovative solutions that bridge traditional legacy systems with modern cloud platforms. This establishment fosters a hybrid work environment, allowing employees to work both remotely and onsite on designated weekdays, ensuring a balanced and flexible work culture. The firm is engaged in several long-term projects requiring experienced IT professionals with a strong background in database administration and cloud technologies. Given its emphasis on adopting robust DevOps practices and scalable database solutions, the company is seeking a skilled Database Administrator to join its team for a contract duration of 6+ months. This opportunity is designed for individuals who possess a deep understanding of database migration strategies, data transformation techniques, and cloud-native technologies, particularly within Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystems.
As a Database Administrator in this role, you will play a critical part in supporting database migration and DevOps initiatives by deploying and configuring highly available and reliable database environments. Your primary platform will be MySQL running on Amazon RDS/Aurora, tasked with migrating diverse legacy data sources into this modern infrastructure. The role demands hands-on experience in developing and executing ETL processes, automating database provisioning using Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform, and integrating database deployments seamlessly into CI/CD pipelines using version control systems such as Git. This ensures that data migrations and database changes are consistent, version-controlled, and deliver high-quality outcomes aligned with business requirements.
Your responsibilities extend beyond initial deployment and migration to include continuous administration and optimization of database systems across production, staging, UAT, development, and test environments. This involves monitoring database health, fine-tuning performance, troubleshooting issues, applying patches, managing backup and recovery strategies, and implementing security measures such as access controls and encryption to protect sensitive data. Additionally, you will be expected to support reporting infrastructures making use of Amazon QuickSight and other business intelligence platforms, enabling stakeholders to access actionable insights derived from the underlying data.
The role requires a proactive mindset and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams. Strong communication skills are essential to document database configurations, processes, and operational procedures that support auditability, knowledge transfer, and compliance with regulatory standards. Notably, candidates must have U.S. citizenship due to the need to obtain high-level security clearances, including CJIS clearance from the FBI and clearance from CFIUS and the Department of Justice post-hire. This highlights the sensitive and critical nature of the data involved and the trust placed in this position.
The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical fields, with extensive experience in MySQL database administration, cloud database migration, ETL development, and automation in hybrid environments combining both on-premises and AWS cloud infrastructure. Additional proficiencies in other database platforms like SQL Server and Oracle, scripting languages, and DevOps toolchains will provide a competitive edge, enabling the candidate to support a wide array of project demands and contribute substantially to the company’s ongoing technological evolution.
