The AWS Data Center Operations Manager role is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing the operational performance of data center facilities distributed globally. This role requires a dynamic manager with strong technical expertise, excellent people management skills, and the vision to elevate AWS data center operations to new heights. The successful candidate will lead teams that handle hardware and network diagnostics, physical repairs, and troubleshooting, ensuring the highest standards of availability and reliability. As part of this role, you will be actively involved in prioritizing and assigning trouble tickets, managing diverse teams across various locations, developing career paths for employees, recruiting, and training data center staff to maintain effective staffing levels. You will also be responsible for day-to-day operational management, including queue management, shift scheduling, hardware logistics, and meeting operational KPIs and SLA requirements.

This position involves participation in an on-call rotation and requires flexibility to travel or commute to different data center sites as per business needs. Given the varied stages of data center operations, candidates will need to adapt by potentially working at alternative sites during training or until their assigned facility is fully operational. The manager will play a pivotal role in driving process improvements, technology innovation, automation, and maintaining a culture of exceptional customer experience within the team. The AWS Data Center Operations Manager will also manage large-scale incident responses, act as call leader during outages, and continuously strive to enhance operational workflows and throughput.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to travel to or commute between data center locations as needed
  • Willingness to temporarily work at alternative sites during training or until assigned facility is operational
  • Travel frequency varies by business needs and operational status
  • Must be able to travel over 50 miles or commute less than 50 miles to data center sites
  • U.S. citizenship required for access to AWS GovCloud region

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • 4+ years of IT experience
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • 2+ years of data center operations and on-call support experience
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing computer hardware
  • Technical writing experience
  • Certifications such as A+, Net+, Sec+, CCNA, LPIC, Linux+, AWS certification, CND, Network+, or Security+
  • Experience with system management tools and client/server environments

Job Duties

  • Prioritize and assign trouble tickets to data center technicians and operators
  • Manage the performance of a diverse team of data center operation professionals across different locations
  • Develop career paths for employees and update internal tools
  • Recruit and train data technicians to ensure appropriate staffing levels
  • Ensure effective management of day-to-day data center operations including queue management, 24/7 shift arrangement, and hardware logistics
  • Act as subject matter expert across all aspects of data center operations
  • Monitor and ensure all operational KPIs and metrics are being met
  • Inspire and guide process improvements, technology innovation and automation within the team
  • Manage large-scale events (outages) acting as the call leader
  • Manage and improve workflows and throughput for data center operations
  • Recommend, document, and oversee policies and procedures to meet industry best practices and SLAs
  • Maintain the on-call schedule coordinating absences and vacations
  • Continuously strive to improve customer experience through quality and service enhancements
