As a technology manager within AWS Data Center Operations, you will join a dynamic and diverse team consisting of software, hardware, network engineers, supply chain experts, security professionals, and operations managers. This team is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in safety, security, and operational efficiency, allowing customers to innovate without limits. This role involves hands-on leadership and strategic oversight of data center operations on a global scale. You will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of data center operation professionals across multiple locations. Your leadership will focus on optimizing day-to-day operations, improving workflows, driving process improvements, sponsoring technical initiatives, and supporting hardware and network diagnostics and repair. You will also lead incident response efforts during large-scale outages, ensuring system stability and rapid recovery. This position requires active participation in an on-call rotation and managing shift schedules to maintain continuous service availability. The role may involve travel to different facilities, including new or developing data centers, for training and operational alignment. Effective communication and collaboration across various AWS teams are crucial for driving innovation and maintaining operational excellence.

Candidates must be able to travel or commute to data center locations as needed, with flexibility to work at alternate sites during training or until their facility is fully functional. The position requires a strong mix of technical proficiency, leadership skills, and operational experience to meet stringent KPIs and SLAs. Competitive salary ranges from $78,400 to $137,300 annually, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and parental leave.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to travel to or commute between data center locations as needed
  • Willingness to temporarily work at alternative sites during training or until assigned facility is operational
  • Travel frequency varies based on business needs
  • Must be able to travel over 50 miles or commute less than 50 miles to active data center sites
  • Operational responsibility for a data center
  • Participation in on-call rotation
  • Manage day-to-day data center operations
  • Prioritize trouble tickets and manage hardware logistics
  • Develop and mentor team members
  • Lead incident response and outage management
  • Enforce policies and meet SLAs

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or equivalent
  • 4+ years of IT experience
  • 2+ years of people management experience
  • 2+ years of operations and on-call support experience for data center or mission critical facilities
  • Strong leadership and team development skills
  • Experience with hardware troubleshooting and repair
  • Technical writing skills
  • Relevant IT certifications such as A+, Network+, Security+, CCNA, LPIC, Linux+, AWS certification, or Certified Network Defender
  • Experience with system management tools and client/server environments
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities

Job Duties

  • Prioritize and assign trouble tickets to data center technicians and operators
  • Manage the performance of a diverse team of data center operation professionals across multiple locations
  • Develop career paths for employees and update internal tools
  • Recruit and train data technicians to ensure appropriate staffing levels
  • Oversee daily data center operations including queue management, 24/7 shift arrangements, and hardware logistics
  • Act as subject matter expert in data center operations
  • Ensure all operational KPIs and metrics are met
  • Inspire and guide improvements in team processes, technology innovation, and automation
  • Manage large-scale events such as outages and act as call leader
  • Improve workflows and throughput for data center operations
  • Recommend and enforce policies and procedures to meet industry standards and SLAs
  • Maintain on-call schedules coordinating absences and vacations
  • Continuously strive to improve customer experience and service quality
