This role is for a Cytotechnologist who will play a critical part in the cytology laboratory’s operations. The Cytotechnologist's primary responsibility is to prepare and stain microscopic slides from various cellular specimens, including blood, tissue scrapings, and body fluids. They will examine these cellular samples to detect the presence of cancer, abnormalities, and other pathological conditions. The professional will categorize slides, record classifications, compile patient listings for follow-up, and promptly report any unusual cell structures or abnormalities to the supervising Pathologist. This position requires strict adherence to established standard practices and laboratory procedures.

The successful candidate will manage daily operations of the cytology laboratory, ensuring high-quality slide preparation through operation of specialized equipment such as staining machines, ThinPrep systems, and coverslippers. They will perform both routine and special stains within acceptable turnaround times, assist Pathologists during fine needle aspirations, and utilize advanced microscopy skills to identify and mark unusual findings using accepted morphologic criteria. The role involves continuous quality control and improvement activities, documenting results in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory standards.

Additionally, the Cytotechnologist will participate actively in preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment, troubleshoot minor technical issues, and coordinate with service providers for maintenance as needed. Inventory management including ordering and restocking supplies and reagents is also part of the role, alongside ensuring compliance with all safety and infection control protocols.

Lifelong learning and professional development are encouraged within this role. The Cytotechnologist will attend in-house continuing education programs, stay abreast of advances in cytotechnology, and contribute to training new staff members. Collaboration with various stakeholders including supervisors, managers, and directors is expected to complete special projects or tasks on time.

A Bachelor’s degree in science or equivalent is required, along with 1 to 2 years of relevant experience. Certification as a Cytotechnologist by ASCP or eligibility for the same is required, with mandatory annual membership maintenance with the certification agency.
