Job Description

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a premier federal agency dedicated to safeguarding America's borders and ensuring the security and prosperity of the nation. With a workforce of over 60,000 professionals, CBP operates as a key component of the Department of Homeland Security. The agency’s mission encapsulates the enforcement of customs, immigration, and agricultural laws while facilitating legitimate trade and travel across the United States. CBP officers serve on the front lines of national security, protecting the American people from illicit activities such as drug smuggling, illegal immigration, and trafficking of contraband goods while supporting economic growth by enabling lawful commerce.

CBP is currently offering new recruitment and retention incentives for Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) positions across various mission-critical duty locations nationwide. These incentives include sign-on bonuses up to $15,000 per year with service contracts, depending on duty location, coupled with competitive salaries ranging from $63,431 to $127,464 annually (GS-9 level), with opportunities for overtime that can add up to $45,000 annually. These positions are federal law enforcement career ladder roles with promotion potential up to the GS-12 grade, providing job stability, professional development, and a broad spectrum of federal benefits including health, dental, retirement plans, and generous leave packages.

As a Customs and Border Protection Officer, you will be part of an elite law enforcement team tasked with protecting the United States by enforcing laws at ports of entry and along the borders. The role involves inspecting individuals, conveyances, and cargo to ensure compliance with all applicable customs, immigration, and agricultural regulations. Officers conduct interviews, assess risk, and make critical decisions regarding the admissibility of persons and goods to the country. The position requires individuals to be highly observant, decisive, and committed to public service as their actions directly impact national security and public safety.

Detailed training is provided to all officers, including a paid pre-academy orientation and a rigorous 101-day academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA. This comprehensive program equips new officers with the skills necessary for firearms proficiency, law enforcement tactics, legal knowledge, physical fitness, and core customs and immigration enforcement procedures. Certain duty locations, particularly those in southern border areas and major ports like Miami and Puerto Rico, also require completion of a Spanish language training program to enhance communication capabilities.

Duty locations include strategic sites across the United States such as Anchorage, Alaska; multiple locations in Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New York, North Dakota, Vermont, and Washington, among others. Candidates have the opportunity to select preferred duty stations where recruitment incentives apply. These positions demand U.S. citizenship, residency requirements, and age restrictions due to law enforcement retirement provisions, but veterans may be exempt from some limitations.

Joining CBP as a Customs and Border Protection Officer offers a unique and meaningful career opportunity to serve the nation’s interests. Employees benefit from a strong culture of camaraderie and pride while enjoying comprehensive training, competitive compensation, and a fulfilling career dedicated to the protection and prosperity of the United States. If you desire a challenging federal law enforcement role with growth potential and excellent benefits, the CBPO position may be the perfect fit.
