Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Age restriction requiring selection before 40th birthday unless exempt

  • Completion of paid pre-academy orientation
  • Successful completion of 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at FLETC
  • Successful completion of required online Spanish training for designated locations
  • Ability to meet physical and training standards
  • Compliance with federal law enforcement retirement provisions

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years full-time general work experience demonstrating interpersonal skills and ability to learn and apply facts
  • Bachelor’s degree or four-year course of study from an accredited college or university
  • Combination of college education and general work experience
  • One year of specialized work experience performing physical inspections and applying laws and regulations for GS-7
  • Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one full year of graduate level education
  • Combination of specialized experience and graduate education
  • Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience for GS-9 eligibility

Job Duties

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations
  • Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel
  • Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances
  • Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States
  • Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband
  • Attending and successfully completing comprehensive law enforcement training
  • Utilizing observational techniques to detect criminal activity and fraud
  • Applying federal, state, and local laws and regulations in decision-making processes
