Job Description

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is a premier federal agency under the Department of Homeland Security tasked with the vital role of protecting America’s borders and facilitating lawful trade and travel. CBP employs over 60,000 professionals who work diligently to secure the nation by enforcing customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations. As part of its workforce, CBP offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals seeking a rewarding career in law enforcement with excellent pay, comprehensive benefits, and job stability. Joining CBP means becoming part of an elite team dedicated to safeguarding American interests and enhancing the nation’s economic prosperity through their commitment and expertise.

The role of a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) is integral to the operational success of CBP’s mission. CBPOs are federal law enforcement officers responsible for inspecting individuals, vehicles, and cargo entering the United States to prevent illegal activities such as drug smuggling, human trafficking, and the entry of prohibited goods. These officers enforce multiple laws and regulations that protect the country’s borders, ensuring both security and the facilitation of legitimate trade and travel. The position is an entry-level career ladder role with grade levels ranging from GS-5 to GS-12. Salary for newly appointed officers varies between $40,332 and $109,952 annually, including locality pay depending on duty location, with additional overtime pay opportunities that can reach up to $45,000 per year.

CBPO assignments are mission-critical and geographically diverse, available in a wide range of duty stations across the United States, including various ports of entry located in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Vermont, and Washington. Some locations offer recruitment incentives between 10% and 25% of salary to encourage deployment in high-demand areas. The position requires candidates to provide location preferences but also prepares them for deployment wherever operational needs exist.

Beyond the tactical enforcement duties, Customs and Border Protection Officers undergo rigorous formal training. This begins with a paid pre-academy orientation followed by a comprehensive 101-day CBP Field Operations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. Training encompasses law enforcement skills, immigration law, firearms proficiency, cargo inspection, physical fitness, and in some cases, Spanish language training to support operational effectiveness at select border locations.

As federal employees, CBPOs receive a robust array of employment benefits including health insurance, dental coverage, retirement plans akin to 401(k) accounts, generous leave programs, and career development opportunities. The position is also subject to federal law enforcement retirement provisions with age restrictions for initial appointment, though exceptions apply for veterans and current or prior law enforcement personnel.

Joining CBP as a Customs and Border Protection Officer provides a meaningful career path filled with challenges, public service, and professional growth. It is an opportunity to serve the nation’s interests on the front lines of border security while benefiting from job stability, competitive compensation, and an extensive benefits package.
