Job Description

California School Employees Association (CSEA) is a leading labor union representing over 250,000 classified school employees across 750 school districts and community colleges throughout California. Our members include para-educators, administrative staff, food service workers, bus drivers, and employees in IT, grounds, maintenance, and operations. With a strong commitment to enhancing the rights, benefits, and working conditions of classified school employees, CSEA plays a pivotal role in advocating for fair wages, quality healthcare, secure pensions, and improved workplace safety for its members. Our union is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that values the contributions of every employee and strives to secure the resources and protections necessary to improve their professional and personal lives.

The Custodian/Maintenance Worker position based at the San Jose Headquarters is a key role within CSEA, responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and functional facility environment. This non-exempt role involves a broad range of custodial and minor maintenance tasks essential to sustaining the day-to-day operations of the office. Working from 12:00 pm to 7:30 pm, the custodian/maintenance worker assists the Facilities Director by performing routine repairs, cleaning, and upkeep to ensure all spaces meet the organization’s standards of safety and cleanliness. The position requires hands-on involvement with plumbing, electrical, and office equipment repairs, as well as general upkeep such as waxing floors, cleaning carpets, and managing waste disposal.

In this highly visible role, the custodian/maintenance worker interacts regularly with department managers, employees, vendors, contractors, and subcontractors, requiring strong communication skills and a cooperative attitude. The ideal candidate will have a solid mechanical aptitude, proficiency with cleaning equipment and materials, and the ability to adhere strictly to safety and regulatory guidelines, including compliance with California Occupational Safety and Health Acts (Cal/OSHA). This position also requires physical stamina and the ability to perform sustained heavy physical activity, including lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 75 pounds, as well as climbing ladders.

CSEA offers outstanding salaries and benefits, such as 19 paid holidays, 3 weeks of vacation starting, increasing to 5 weeks after 7 years, comprehensive medical benefits for employees and their families, life insurance coverage, and participation in pension and 401(k) plans. We pride ourselves on fostering a workplace culture that promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we encourage applications from all qualified individuals. Candidates are encouraged to apply online at our website and provide a cover letter outlining their passion for the role and how their experience aligns with the position’s duties and responsibilities.
