Job Description

The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is a renowned public community college serving the Allegheny County region, known for its commitment to providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality education and support services to its diverse student body. As one of the largest community colleges in Pennsylvania, CCAC takes pride in fostering a vibrant educational environment where students can achieve their academic and career goals through a wide variety of programs and community-centered initiatives. The college comprises multiple campuses, including the Allegheny Campus and Main Campus, where various departments and support services operate cohesively to maintain a conducive learning atmosphere. The Housekeeping Department at CCAC plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the college facilities remain clean, safe, and well-maintained, supporting the college's broader mission of student success and community engagement.

The Custodian/Laborer position (Regular, Full-Time) at the Allegheny Campus is a vital role within CCAC’s Housekeeping Department that ensures the physical upkeep and cleanliness of the college’s campuses and centers. This full-time role is graded as SEIU A with a starting salary of $15.95 per hour and is fully in-person, requiring the custodian to work primarily on-site, with the potential for changes in remote work policies. The standard working hours are Monday through Friday, from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm, with additional hours on evenings and weekends as necessary to meet departmental demands.

In this position, the custodian/laborer supports physical plant services across the college and its various centers, providing essential housekeeping, groundskeeping, and general maintenance tasks. The role involves sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and waxing floors; shampooing carpets; cleaning walls, vents, furniture, restrooms, windows, and other interior fixtures; and replenishing supplies. The laborer is also responsible for groundskeeping duties such as grass cutting, gardening, snow removal, and painting outdoor surfaces. Additionally, minor repairs and routine maintenance on cleaning equipment are performed, alongside setting up furniture and moving heavy materials to support college operations. The custodian may also operate college vehicles for transporting supplies and materials between locations.

Physical demands of this position are significant; candidates must be able to lift, carry, and move heavy materials regularly, often up to 50 pounds, and work in various indoor and outdoor conditions, including inclement weather. This role requires adherence to cleaning product instructions, proficient use of cleaning and groundskeeping machinery, and the capacity for physical tasks such as climbing, bending, squatting, and walking for extended periods. A valid Pennsylvania driver's license is necessary only for those roles involving driving.

CCAC offers an outstanding benefits package for their employees, including comprehensive health coverage with low out-of-pocket costs, generous and varied time off benefits complemented by a four-day workweek during the summer months, and robust retirement plans with employer matching. Additional employee support includes group life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage, flexible spending accounts, and access to an employee assistance program for wellness and personal challenges. Educational support is also provided through tuition waivers, reimbursement options, loan forgiveness programs, and professional development opportunities to encourage growth within the institution.

Overall, this role is crucial for maintaining the college’s environment, enhancing the experience of both students and staff, and contributing to the college’s mission of academic and community excellence. This position fits those who take pride in supporting educational facilities, have a strong work ethic, and seek stable, full-time employment with meaningful benefits and opportunities for development at a respected educational institution.
