Job Description

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a prestigious institution renowned for its dedication to academic excellence, community engagement, and fostering student success. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina—a city celebrated for its vibrant arts scene and innovative spirit—WSSU stands as North Carolina's only university designated as an Opportunity College by both the Carnegie Classifications of Higher Education and the American Council on Education (ACE). The university offers rigorous academic programs in health sciences, business, education, and the humanities, preparing students to take on leadership roles with a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills.

The university prides itself on its supportive environment, creating a close-knit community that nurtures both professional and academic growth. WSSU’s campus spans 110 acres and includes 1,500,000 square feet of teaching, research, and administrative buildings. The dynamic local economy, with thriving sectors in arts, healthcare, and technology, offers students and faculty abundant opportunities for professional development and collaboration.

The role of Building Environmental Services Technician, specifically as a Custodian/Housekeeper Team Leader, plays a critical part in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall maintenance of the campus facilities. This full-time permanent position involves hands-on responsibility for cleaning and disinfecting university buildings, including offices, classrooms, and restrooms, to ensure a healthy environment for students, faculty, and staff.

As a Team Leader, the selected individual will oversee daily cleaning operations, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, vacuuming, disinfecting, and trash removal. The role requires careful monitoring and replenishment of cleaning supplies such as tissue and soap dispensers to maintain optimal hygiene standards. In addition to standard cleaning duties, the Team Leader will perform project-related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional outdoor custodial work. An essential aspect of the position is training and guiding custodial staff to uphold quality standards and improve overall team efficiency.

Effective communication and customer service skills are paramount, as the Team Leader will regularly interact with university staff, students, and visitors. They will provide courteous and professional service while managing workplace safety by adhering to established protocols, reporting equipment malfunctions, and ensuring proper use and labeling of cleaning materials. The position occasionally requires working evenings, weekends, or during adverse weather conditions to meet institutional needs.

WSSU offers a competitive salary range of $33,540 to $47,847, with internal salary considerations between $33,540 and $40,170, reflecting the candidate’s experience and competencies. This position is classified as non-exempt, with a 40-hour workweek from Monday through Friday, typically 3:00 PM to 12:00 AM, subject to change based on university needs.

Joining Winston-Salem State University means becoming part of a dedicated team committed to creating a safe, clean, and welcoming campus atmosphere. The university values diversity and inclusion, supporting second-chance employment and encouraging all qualified applicants to apply. This role offers stable employment with opportunity for personal and professional growth within an environment that champions innovation, collaboration, and respect.
