Job Description
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is a distinguished institution that combines academic excellence, community engagement, and a commitment to fostering student success. As North Carolina's only university to earn the distinguished designation of Opportunity College by the Carnegie Classifications of Higher Education and the American Council on Education (ACE), WSSU is dedicated to preparing students for leadership roles through rigorous programs in health sciences, business, education, and the humanities. Known for its supportive environment, the university fosters a close-knit community that nurtures both professional and academic excellence.
Situated in Winston-Salem, North Carolina—known as the city of Arts and innovation, WSSU provides students with opportunities to engage in a dynamic mix of professional, social, and cultural experiences. Winston-Salem is home to thriving arts, healthcare, and technology sectors, offering both students and faculty unique collaboration opportunities and professional development pathways. With its beautiful campus, strong sense of community, and dedication to fostering personal and professional growth, Winston-Salem State University is an ideal place to teach, work, and learn.
The Building Environmental Services Technician position at WSSU offers an exciting opportunity to join a friendly and supportive campus community. This permanent full-time Custodian/Housekeeper role is central to maintaining the cleanliness and safety of university buildings. The technician is responsible for performing daily routine cleaning and disinfecting duties to ensure the campus environment is hygienic, welcoming, and conducive to learning and working.
The responsibilities of the role include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting, disinfecting, vacuuming, and removing trash. The technician will also fill dispensers such as tissue and soap dispensers with the appropriate products and maintain restrooms by cleaning floors, commodes, urinals, sinks, mirrors, and dispensers. Additional tasks involve detail cleaning, including dusting and glass cleaning in assigned areas, and project-related activities such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional outdoor custodial tasks.
The technician is expected to collaborate closely with peers, sharing resources and providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, and staff. Communication is essential for reporting equipment malfunctions, completing mandatory forms such as attendance logs and property sign-outs, and adhering to safety standards by correctly labeling and storing materials.
Essential to this role is the commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe work environment through strict adherence to safety protocols and the proper use of personal protective equipment. The position operates on a 40-hour workweek, Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with some mandatory weekend hours during summer months. The salary ranges from $33,540 to $47,847, reflecting competency, experience, equity, and market considerations.
WSSU supports second-chance employment for individuals previously incarcerated or justice-involved, fostering an inclusive hiring environment. A criminal background check will be conducted on the finalist prior to hire. The application process requires a fully completed electronic application including detailed work history; resumes alone are not accepted.
This role requires some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the ability to perform medium to heavy physical work. Experience with institutional cleaning, particularly in higher education settings, and familiarity with various cleaning equipment such as vacuums, burnishers, scrubbers, extractors, and wet vacuums is preferred. The ability to adjust to changing job tasks and assignments is an important attribute of the successful candidate.
Joining WSSU as a Building Environmental Services Technician means becoming part of a dedicated team that ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment supportive of the university’s mission. This role offers opportunities for professional growth, skill development, and meaningful daily contributions to the campus community.
