The role of Campus Operations - Custodial at Uplift Ascend Preparatory is integral to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This full-time position involves performing daily custodial tasks essential to the smooth operation of the school facilities. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure that the school’s buildings, grounds, and equipment remain attractive and environmentally safe. The custodial staff is responsible for a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance duties, including routine janitorial tasks, light maintenance, and emergency response. These responsibilities contribute directly to creating a comfortable and efficient place for educational activities and help foster a positive atmosphere conducive to learning and growth.

In this role, the employee will clean and maintain classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeteria dining areas, and exterior grounds. Tasks also include setting up and cleaning after school events, performing minor repairs such as painting and changing light bulbs, and operating janitorial machinery like floor scrubbers and buffers. The position requires vigilance regarding safety and security, with the responsibility to report any hazards, equipment failures, or emergencies promptly to the school administration or Operations Director. Employees in this role will occasionally oversee external contractors who assist with non-routine maintenance and summer refresh duties.

The job environment involves physical activity such as extensive walking, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, and exposure to varying weather conditions. Employees must be able to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, climbing, and use of both hands and fingers. The work setting can be dynamic, frequently involving handling chemicals, noise from equipment, and interactions with students and staff. Effective communication skills in English and basic technological proficiency are necessary, as the position requires using computer software for work orders and a smartphone for communication. This role does not require bilingual skills but does emphasize the importance of learning and using safety protocols, including the operation of burglar alarms.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in janitorial service or building maintenance
  • Experience with janitorial machinery preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Ability to use basic technology including computers and smartphones
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds and extensive walking
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions including exposure to fumes and extreme temperatures
  • Vigilance for safety and security issues
  • Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment

Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent or minimum 2 years’ experience in the janitorial service industry or 2 years' experience in building maintenance
  • Experience working with janitorial machinery (floor scrubbers, floor buffers, restroom cleaning machines) preferred but not required
  • Ability to receive and understand verbal and written instructions in English
  • Ability to learn and use computer software to view work orders
  • Ability to use basic office equipment
  • Ability to operate a burglar alarm
  • Ability to use a smartphone to send and receive photos and text messages
  • Ability to use standard custodial equipment computerized displays and controls
  • Ability to use a computer to complete video or teleconference training

Job Duties

  • Maintains campus buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment by performing regular janitorial and maintenance tasks
  • Performs routine custodial and maintenance tasks
  • Perform cafeteria breakfast and lunch dining area cleaning and setup
  • Perform cleaning on restrooms, hallways, classrooms and other common areas
  • Perform litter removal and routine cleaning of the exterior of assigned building(s) and property
  • Perform light-duty repairs and maintenance such as painting or changing light bulbs
  • Cleaning bodily fluids and disinfecting surfaces
  • Perform setup for campus events
  • Performs and/or oversees contractors who perform non-routine maintenance tasks and summer refresh tasks
  • Pressure washing and other cleaning of the building exterior
  • Re-painting walls in classrooms and walls inside the building
  • Moving furniture in preparation for stripping and waxing operations
  • Assisting in stripping and waxing operations
  • Notifies school administration of any needed major repairs or equipment failure
  • Remains vigilant on safety and security issues and notifies school administration of any safety or security issues that arise
  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of storage, supply and maintenance areas
  • maintains a record of inventory and orders supplies as needed and requests re-supply
  • Responds to emergency situations in order to confine, resolve or prevent injurious or otherwise hazardous conditions
  • Report emergencies to the Operations Director
  • Additional duties as assigned
