The role available at Uplift Ascend Preparatory is for a Campus Operations Custodial staff member. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the school campus. As a custodial worker, the individual will be responsible for daily custodial tasks, ensuring that the campus buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment are kept in excellent condition. This job is vital for creating an attractive, comfortable, and efficient working environment for school personnel, students, and visitors alike.

The custodial role includes performing routine janitorial and maintenance duties, such as cleaning classrooms, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, and other common areas to high standards of hygiene and safety. The position also requires performing light maintenance tasks, like painting walls, changing light bulbs, and moving furniture to facilitate cleaning operations like stripping and waxing floors. The custodian will set up dining areas for breakfast and lunch and prepare for campus events, supporting the overall school operations.

Beyond routine tasks, this position requires vigilance regarding safety and security issues within the school environment. The employee will report any safety hazards or damages requiring major repairs to the school administration. Additionally, custodians may oversee contractors performing non-routine maintenance and be involved in cleaning the exterior areas of the campus, including pressure washing and litter removal.

Successful candidates will have experience or willingness to learn to operate janitorial machinery such as floor scrubbers, buffers, and restroom cleaning machines. They should possess the ability to utilize basic technology including smartphones and computer software for communication and training purposes. Physical stamina and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy objects and working in varying environmental conditions are essential.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • minimum 2 years’ experience in janitorial service industry or building maintenance
  • ability to receive and understand verbal and written instructions in English
  • ability to use basic office equipment
  • physically able to perform extensive walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and other physical activities
  • able to work in various weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
  • no bilingual skills required
  • capable of working with fumes, airborne particles, and loud equipment
  • effective communication skills

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent or minimum 2 years’ experience in the janitorial service industry or 2 years’ experience in building maintenance
  • experience working with janitorial machinery (floor scrubbers, floor buffers, restroom cleaning machines) preferred but not required
  • ability to receive and understand verbal and written instructions in English
  • ability to learn and use computer software to view work orders for the day
  • ability to use basic office equipment
  • ability to learn how to operate a burglar alarm
  • applicant must be able to use a smart phone to send and receive photos and text messages
  • ability to use standard custodial equipment computerized displays and controls
  • ability to use a computer to complete video or teleconference training

Job Duties

  • Maintains campus buildings, facilities, grounds, and equipment by performing regular janitorial and maintenance tasks
  • performs routine custodial and maintenance tasks
  • perform cafeteria breakfast and lunch dining area cleaning and setup
  • perform cleaning on restrooms, hallways, classrooms and other common areas
  • perform litter removal and routine cleaning of the exterior of assigned building(s) and property
  • perform light-duty repairs and maintenance such as painting or changing light bulbs
  • cleaning bodily fluids and disinfecting surfaces
  • perform setup for campus events
  • performs and/or oversees contractors who perform non-routine maintenance tasks and summer refresh tasks
  • pressure washing and other cleaning of the building exterior
  • re-painting walls in classrooms and walls inside the building
  • moving furniture in preparation for stripping and waxing operations
  • assisting in stripping and waxing operations
  • notifies school administration of any needed major repairs or equipment failure
  • remains vigilant on safety and security issues and notifies school administration of any safety or security issues that arise
  • maintains organization and cleanliness of storage, supply and maintenance areas
  • maintains a record of inventory and orders supplies as needed and requests re-supply
  • responds to emergency situations in order to confine, resolve or prevent injurious or otherwise hazardous conditions
  • report emergencies to the Operations Director
  • additional duties as assigned
