Job Description

University Housing, a key division within UW-Madison, is committed to providing well-maintained, safe, and welcoming living and learning environments for undergraduate and graduate students as well as their families. The Housing Facilities team manages an extensive portfolio of residence halls and university apartments, encompassing over 30 buildings and more than 2 million square feet of space, which includes residential living quarters, dining facilities, classrooms, office spaces, and event venues. The team supports a diverse community of thousands of students, staff, and guests throughout the academic year and summer conference periods.

University Housing Facilities is actively seeking motivated Custodian Leads to join their operations team. This regular full-time position offers a starting wage of $18.36 per hour or higher depending on qualifications, along with a competitive benefits package that includes vacation, paid time off, holidays, retirement pension plan, and access to employee insurance programs. Current employees in the Custodian title may be eligible for an additional hourly premium and shifts may include weekday mornings primarily with occasional weekend work. Custodian Leads play an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall quality of University Housing spaces. They are responsible not only for performing custodial duties but also for assisting in coordinating work tasks, overseeing staff performance, supporting emergency procedures, and fostering a positive customer service environment. The Custodian Lead position demands excellent communication skills to interact effectively with residents, students, staff, and guests, as well as the capacity to lead and train new team members. The role is dynamic, fast-paced, and requires flexibility to support various operations throughout the year. Job Requirements

  • English proficiency with the ability to speak, read, write, and understand verbal instructions
  • Six months of custodial and/or cleaning experience within an academic, commercial, or other related environment
  • Available to work scheduled shifts which may include early mornings and occasional weekends
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English via multiple channels
  • Ability to perform light maintenance and custodial tasks
  • Willingness to assist in emergency response and safety protocols
  • Eligibility to pass a criminal background check
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced team environment

Job Qualifications

  • English proficiency with the ability to speak, read, write, and understand verbal instructions
  • Six months of custodial and/or cleaning experience within an academic, commercial, or other related environment
  • Leadership experience preferred
  • Valid drivers license that meets UW Risk Management standards preferred
  • High school diploma preferred

Job Duties

  • Communicate with residents and guests to address needs and service requests
  • Complete work in occupied or vacant residential, common area, and/or dining spaces
  • Demonstrate and role model exceptional customer service
  • Create, promote and participate in a collaborative team environment
  • Maintain and implement prescribed cleaning standards
  • Provide support and assist as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency
  • Communicate in English via radio, written instruction, and in person with staff and supervisors
  • Assist with resident move in and out operations
  • Perform snow removal tasks on community walkways and stairs
  • Monitor and communicate the performance of systems and staff within facilities
  • Prepare, service, and/or maintain residence hall and dining facilities for residents and guests
  • Perform light maintenance duties
  • Schedule, monitor, and communicate with staff and assist with basic training
  • Monitor and secure facility interior and exterior entrances and report issues to appropriate entities
  • Assist residents and guests with event set up and take down
  • Document and report repairs, violations, and pest control needs
  • Respond to facility emergency and hazardous situations, and escalate incidents according to established policies and procedures
  • Maintain organization of supply areas and equipment, document inventory, and request additional supplies as needed
  • Maintain clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • Utilize basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
