Job Description

The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is a reputable educational institution known for its commitment to providing quality education and fostering community development across multiple campuses and centers. As a public community college, CCAC offers a wide range of associate degree programs, certificate courses, and workforce development training designed to meet the diverse needs of its student population and the broader community. The College prides itself on maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments on all its campuses, which include the South Campus, where this particular position is based. CCAC values its employees and strives to create a supportive work culture with a focus on professional growth, work-life balance, and employee well-being. The college supports its workforce through comprehensive benefit packages, opportunities for career advancement, and a collaborative work atmosphere.

The Custodian / Laborer position at CCAC is an integral role within the physical plant services department, under the oversight of the Housekeeping Supervisor. This regular part-time role is located at the South Campus and is critical to preserving the cleanliness, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the college’s facilities and grounds. The custodian/laborer is responsible for general housekeeping, janitorial, grounds keeping, and basic maintenance duties across the college-wide campuses and centers. These tasks are essential to advancing the mission of CCAC by providing a clean and safe environment conducive to learning and community engagement.

Working in this role involves a mix of indoor and outdoor duties, requiring physical stamina and versatility. On any given day, the custodian/laborer may be sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing floors, shampooing carpets, cleaning restrooms, and maintaining furniture and fixtures. Additionally, grounds keeping duties such as mowing lawns, gardening, snow removal, and salt spreading are performed to ensure the campuses remain well-maintained year-round. The labor component includes minor repair work using hand tools, assisting with painting, laying concrete, and general upkeep tasks. This position also requires the ability to safely operate various equipment and machinery including vacuums, rug shampoo machines, lawn mowers, and snowplows.

The role emphasizes quality customer service to both internal staff and external visitors, ensuring a positive impression of the college’s facilities. Responsibilities include setting up and moving furniture and equipment, waste removal, cleaning of light fixtures, and replacing bulbs. The custodial staff must be reliable, with regular and timely attendance, and able to travel between different locations within the CCAC system as required. The position demands physical labor such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy objects, often up to 50 pounds or more. Working hours may include evenings and weekends to meet departmental needs, and there is a summer four-day workweek schedule during June and July. This position is fully in-person as remote work is not an option.

The salary grade for this position is SEIU A, starting at $15.95 per hour, underscoring its status as a vital support staff role in college operations. The college requires all successful candidates to pass a post-offer, pre-employment medical examination and performance evaluation to ensure fitness for duty. Additionally, employees must undergo criminal record and child abuse clearances to comply with college policies.

As part of the CCAC team, employees benefit from a comprehensive health coverage plan with low out-of-pocket costs, generous vacation, personal, sick, and holiday pay benefits, and retirement planning options including a 403(b) plan with employer matching or a state-defined benefit pension. The college also offers employer-paid group life insurance, disability coverage, flexible spending accounts, and an Employee Assistance Program for confidential support services. Educational support is provided through tuition waivers, reimbursement opportunities, and professional development programs, fostering career growth and stability. Exclusive employee perks and rewards and free employee parking further enhance the employment experience.
