Job Description
The Green Bay Police Department is a vital public safety organization located in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Committed to protecting and serving the community, the department operates with a focus on safety, professionalism, and community engagement. As a municipal law enforcement entity, the department manages various facilities critical to its operations, requiring upkeep to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for officers, staff, and visitors alike. The Green Bay Police Department values diversity and inclusivity in its workforce, recognizing that different perspectives enhance the quality of service provided to the community. The department is also a leader in employee health and wellness, offering comprehensive programs such as the Health/1265 initiative that encourages employees to engage in their health and well-being through insurance premium incentives and other beneficial resources.
The department is currently seeking a Custodian to join its team to ensure the cleanliness, maintenance, and general upkeep of its facilities. This is a full-time position with a competitive hourly hiring rate of $25.27. The working schedule is from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with additional hours as needed for call-ins, including snow removal responsibilities during winter months. There is no residency requirement for this position, making it accessible for candidates from various locations.
The Custodian's role is multifaceted and essential to the daily operation of the Green Bay Police Department's facilities. The successful candidate will perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, cleaning floors by vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and polishing. The position also involves maintenance work like removing and installing floor tiles and carpets, washing walls and woodwork, and cleaning windows. Custodians will also be responsible for assembling and moving office equipment and furniture, changing light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, emptying waste and recycle containers, and locking office doors to ensure security.
Beyond typical custodial duties, the position requires the performance of minor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work, as well as drywall installation, wall texturing, and painting. Monitoring and preventative maintenance of machinery and equipment, including HVAC systems, are key responsibilities, necessitating prompt reports of any malfunctions to supervisors. Seasonal responsibilities such as snow and ice removal and maintaining grass and landscaped areas—including weed control, lawn mowing, raking, trimming, and general cleaning of walks and parking lots—are also included. This ensures that the department's facilities and surrounding areas are both functional and presentable year-round.
Candidates must be capable of performing physical activities including lifting heavy objects (up to 75 pounds occasionally with assistance), and engaging in frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying. They must also be comfortable working in varied environmental conditions and performing tasks that require reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
The Green Bay Police Department encourages candidates of all backgrounds to apply, emphasizing a collaborative work environment that fosters mutual respect and the continuous development of skills critical to building maintenance and custodial services. The department also offers an environment where employees’ health and wellness are a priority, and where the contributions of staff are truly valued and recognized.
