Job Description

LEAP Academy University Charter School is an educational institution that operates a district comprising four school buildings. The institution places a high value on maintaining the appearance and functionality of its physical environment, and provides a range of services to ensure a safe, clean, attractive, and pleasant atmosphere conducive to academic and extracurricular activities. As a charter school, LEAP Academy combines a commitment to academic excellence with a strong community focus, serving students while supporting their growth and development in a well-maintained and secure setting. The school district employs a dedicated facilities team to oversee the district's infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness, safety, and operational efficiency. This team plays a crucial role in creating an environment that not only supports educational objectives but also enhances the overall experience for students, staff, and visitors.

The Custodian position at LEAP Academy University Charter School is a full-time role that is essential in upholding this standard of excellence across the school district's facilities. Reporting directly to the Director of Facilities, the Custodian will be responsible for maintaining building cleanliness and ensuring the smooth functioning of the physical spaces within the district. This role covers a wide spectrum of responsibilities, including daily cleaning duties like dusting, waxing, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, restroom maintenance, and waste management. In addition, the Custodian will handle more specialized tasks such as operating floor cleaning machinery, window washing, light bulb replacement, and minor painting jobs.

Beyond routine maintenance, the Custodian supports a variety of activities hosted within the school buildings, including academic events, sports functions, community gatherings, and other non-community related activities as overseen by the school district administration. The role involves setup and breakdown of furniture and equipment for such events, ensuring that the spaces are ready and clean before, during, and after each function. Because of the nature of the duties, flexibility in work hours, including the possibility of shift changes and overtime, is required to meet the demands of the job effectively.

Working at LEAP Academy, custodians become key members of a cooperative team dedicated to maintaining an environment where education and community engagement can thrive. The position is a twelve-month contracted role, with service performed according to the negotiated collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The school district accords importance to continuous evaluation of performance as per state statutes, rules, and board policies, ensuring that standards of quality are consistently met.

In terms of employment benefits, LEAP Academy offers comprehensive health coverage that includes medical, dental, prescription, and vision insurance for employees and their families. Additionally, the school district mandates enrollment in the New Jersey Pension system (TPAF), providing long-term financial security. Employees also have access to optional pre-tax benefits such as flexible spending accounts for childcare, healthcare, and transportation expenses, helping staff manage their finances effectively. This well-rounded compensation and benefits package highlights the school’s commitment to supporting its workforce.

Overall, this Custodian position is ideal for individuals who take pride in their work, enjoy a variety of maintenance tasks, and want to contribute to a positive, well-maintained educational environment. The role offers an opportunity to be an essential part of a collaborative team in a respected educational institution, providing a career path that includes stability, a comprehensive benefits package, and the chance to directly impact the quality of life within the school community.
