Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized organization that serves as a beacon of hope and support for individuals and communities in need. Established as an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, its mission revolves around preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and addressing human needs without discrimination. With a broad international reach, The Salvation Army operates numerous social service programs aimed at transforming lives through compassion, dignity, and care. This esteemed organization thrives on the commitment and passion of its employees, fostering a community dedicated to making a positive difference in society. It values diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from veterans, individuals with disabilities, those impacted by the justice system, and candidates without a college degree. This approach underlines the organization's commitment to equal opportunity and social equity.
The role of Custodian at The Salvation Army is pivotal in supporting the organization’s mission by ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff, clients, and visitors. This part-time position, approximately 25 hours per week, involves performing routine and general cleaning duties across assigned areas to uphold high standards of hygiene and maintenance. The Custodian is entrusted with a variety of responsibilities, from cleaning and dusting surfaces to maintaining carpets and hard floors, sanitizing restrooms, and managing waste disposal. In addition to indoor upkeep, the role may extend to outdoor property maintenance and assisting with building repairs, reflecting a broad scope of duties necessary to support daily operations.
Beyond routine cleaning, the Custodian is responsible for critical tasks such as monitoring and reporting maintenance issues, organizing cleaning supplies, and supporting program space setup. The role demands a proactive approach to facility care, including specific responsibilities like cleaning and maintaining grease traps when applicable, as well as driving donations to thrift stores. The ideal candidate will have janitorial experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and be able to maintain confidentiality. Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365, TEAMS, and SharePoint is preferred, though willingness to learn new software is essential. A valid driver's license and passing a motor vehicle record check are also required.
The Salvation Army offers a comprehensive benefits package, even for part-time employees, including health care options like AFLAC and voluntary life insurance, pension contributions starting after one year of employment, employee discounts, and paid time off. Paid leave benefits are thoughtfully structured, encompassing sick days, vacation days, personal days, paid holidays, and paid birthday leave. The organization emphasizes employee well-being and professional growth alongside its humanitarian objectives. Working as a Custodian here is more than a janitorial role; it is an opportunity to contribute to a larger mission of hope, service, and community upliftment, making it a meaningful and rewarding career choice.
