Job Description

East Los Angeles College (ELAC) is a vital part of the Los Angeles Community College District, offering a rich educational environment to a diverse student body. Established to provide quality education, workforce training, and community services, ELAC plays an essential role in the academic and personal development of students from the local community and beyond. The college campus is well-maintained and equipped with facilities that support a variety of educational disciplines, extracurricular activities, and public events. The college values a clean, safe, and orderly campus as essential to fostering a positive learning environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike.

The position available at East Los Angeles College is a full-time 12-month Custodian role, with a competitive salary range of $49,768.20 to $61,654.08 per year, reflecting the importance of maintaining a professional, clean, and sanitary campus environment. This role is classified as open only and requires attendance in person at the college. As a Custodian, you will perform a broad range of custodial duties necessary to keep the college facilities and grounds clean, well-maintained, and inviting for effective use by students, faculty, staff, and the public.

The custodian's responsibilities encompass cleaning restrooms, classrooms, offices, and hallways by dusting, scrubbing, disinfecting, and vacuuming. You will handle rubbish and recyclables, servicing dispensers for soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue to ensure sanitary conditions. This role also involves specialized tasks such as floor care—sweeping, mopping, waxing, buffing, and refinishing floors—along with maintenance of furniture arrangement, graffiti removal, and window washing.

Additionally, custodians operate a variety of equipment including power washers, sweepers, blowers, trash compactors, and steam cleaning machines, requiring safe and effective operation. The role includes outdoor maintenance of tennis courts, lunch areas, walkways, parking lots, and stadiums, providing a comprehensive custodial presence across the campus grounds. Custodians may also be asked to support special events by arranging furniture, unlocking and securing campus areas, performing flag etiquette duties, and operating college-owned vehicles.

This role requires knowledge and skill in using cleaning chemicals safely, understanding and applying sterilization methods, and using various floor finishes and carpet cleaning techniques effectively. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to lift and move heavy supplies and furniture safely, work collaboratively with the campus community, and follow detailed instructions to maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety throughout the college facilities.

East Los Angeles College offers a supportive work environment that values each employee's contribution to campus life. This position offers several benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance coverage, paid sick leave, paid holidays, vacation accrual, and membership in the Public Employees Retirement System. The college also provides an Employee Assistance Program to support staff wellbeing. East Los Angeles College is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring and employment process.

Working as a Custodian at East Los Angeles College provides an opportunity to contribute directly to the college community's success by maintaining a clean and safe environment that fosters learning and growth. The position is well-suited to individuals who take pride in their work, possess strong attention to detail, and value teamwork and service.
