The Custodian role at United Activities Unlimited is a part-time position, requiring approximately 20-25 hours per week, and is classified as non-exempt, hourly employment with a pay rate of $17.50 per hour, subject to adjustments based on local contractual obligations and budget allowances. This role reports directly to the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and Director of Community Initiatives within the Cornerstone Department. The custodian has a crucial responsibility to maintain a hygienic and safe environment by performing daily cleaning, maintenance, and safety inspections within their assigned worksite. This position contributes significantly to the overall well-being of both participants and staff by ensuring that all communal, office, and program spaces adhere to stringent cleanliness and safety standards. Duties include general janitorial tasks, floor care including sweeping, mopping, and waxing, restroom and kitchen sanitation, and the management of cleaning supplies. The custodian also oversees the appropriate handling and use of cleaning chemicals and equipment, maintaining compliance with OSHA regulations and other relevant health and safety protocols. Flexibility, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are key attributes for success in this role. Moreover, the custodian is expected to interact professionally with staff, visitors, and program participants, contributing positively to the supportive, respectful atmosphere that UAU nurtures. Job Requirements

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18 years or older at time of hire
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions
  • Must pass reference and background checks
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance
  • Ability to keep assigned UAU worksite facility clean and orderly
  • Ability to interact with staff, participants, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous
  • Detail-oriented and thorough while conducting and completing work independently
  • Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed

Job Qualifications

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions
  • Preferred - Minimum 1 year of janitorial experience working in a childcare, school setting or community center workplace setting
  • Preferred - OSHA certified
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance
  • Ability to keep assigned UAU worksite facility clean and orderly
  • Ability to interact with staff, participants, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous
  • Detail-oriented and thorough while conducting and completing work independently
  • Willing to take initiative and be flexible when needed

Job Duties

  • General cleaning and janitorial duties in the common areas including but not limited to offices, bathroom, kitchen, gymnasium, classrooms and common areas
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and/or vacuuming
  • Strip and wax floors as needed and directed
  • Perform and document routine inspection and maintenance activities
  • Carry out heavy cleansing tasks and special projects as directed
  • Daily collection and removal of garbage
  • Every day regularly servicing, cleaning and restocking restrooms, kitchens and breakrooms
  • Follow safety procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures
  • Notify coordinating management when major repairs or maintenance of building operating systems is needed
  • Request and coordinate ordering of supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties
  • Maintains a neat, organized and orderly janitors’ room/ area
  • ensuring cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked
  • Washing windows and other hard surfaces that require sanitizing on a regular basis
  • Properly and successfully abide by OSHA, NY State Workers Comp, NYC Department of Health and UAU Safety Program policies and regulations
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned
