Known for its rigorous academic programs and vibrant campus life, Barnard College attracts students from around the world who are passionate about intellectual exploration, leadership, and community engagement. The college fosters an inclusive and stimulating environment that encourages diversity, creativity, and innovation. With a strong commitment to academic excellence and personal growth, Barnard College supports a wide range of programs in the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and arts. Its campus facilities include academic buildings, residence halls, libraries, cultural centers, and recreational spaces designed to offer students a holistic and enriching college experience.
The role of Custodian at Barnard College is a vital position within the Facilities Services department, responsible for maintaining cleanliness and functionality across the college's academic buildings, residence halls, and grounds. This full-time position, working Thursday through Monday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, plays a critical role in supporting the college's mission by ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The custodian works under the direct supervision of the Facilities Services Custodial Shift Supervisor or a higher-classification manager and is tasked with upholding established cleaning standards in accordance with detailed work instructions and schedules.
The custodian's duties are diverse and include cleaning restrooms, replenishing supplies, disposing of trash, and maintaining various surfaces such as floors, walls, doors, glass, and furniture in multiple campus locations including student rooms, lounges, kitchens, hallways, classrooms, dining areas, and offices. Special cleaning procedures may be required for certain areas as directed by the supervisor. The role also involves proactive maintenance such as floor waxing and carpet care, as well as preparing residential halls for incoming and departing students. During snow events, custodians are responsible for shoveling snow and applying snow melt to ensure safe access to buildings and pathways.
Beyond cleaning tasks, the custodian also assists in setting up furniture and equipment for events, coordinating work schedules to accommodate group arrivals, and maintaining privacy and confidentiality while working in private offices and student residences. Effective communication and collaboration with other Facilities Services teams, Public Safety Officers, and college members are essential to foster a supportive and efficient work environment.
The pay rate for this position is $30.98 per hour at the regular rate, with a probationary rate of $23.24 per hour subject to wage progressions. The salary offer will consider multiple factors, including qualifications, experience, education, and departmental budgets. Barnard College offers an inclusive workplace with a dedication to employee safety, professionalism, and respect. This role represents an excellent opportunity for individuals who are organized, able to prioritize tasks, work well under pressure, and take pride in contributing to the college community's wellbeing and success.
