Job Description
Barnard College is a prestigious private liberal arts college for women located in New York City, known for its rigorous academics and vibrant campus community. Affiliated with Columbia University, Barnard combines a rich tradition of empowering women with innovative educational programs and a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion. The college boasts a beautiful urban campus, state-of-the-art facilities, and a dynamic environment where students, faculty, and staff collaborate to create an inspiring academic and social experience. As part of its commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment, Barnard College seeks dedicated individuals to join its Facilities Services team.
The role of Custodian at Barnard College is a full-time position integral to the upkeep and cleanliness of the college’s academic buildings, residence halls, and outdoor grounds. Working under the direct supervision of the Facilities Services Custodial Shift Supervisor or a Manager in a higher classification, the Custodian is responsible for performing a variety of custodial duties in accordance with established standards and work details. This role is scheduled from Saturday through Wednesday, 3pm to 11:30pm, with Thursday and Friday as regular days off. The custodial team plays a critical role in ensuring that Barnard’s spaces are clean, safe, and orderly, enhancing the overall campus experience for students, faculty, and visitors.
Key responsibilities include cleaning restrooms and replenishing supplies, disposing of trash and recyclables, maintaining floors and carpets through sweeping, mopping, waxing, and polishing, as well as performing special cleaning procedures in designated areas. Custodians are also tasked with moving furniture and equipment to prepare spaces for events, setting up and cleaning residence hall rooms seasonally, and managing snow removal and application of snow melting substances during winter months. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to safety regulations, and a commitment to upholding the college’s policies and values.
The Custodian at Barnard College must be familiar with handling cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety procedures, and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with faculty, staff, and students. The ability to maintain confidentiality and respect privacy in both academic and residential settings is essential. The job demands physical stamina, including the ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds and climb stairs. The pay rate for this position starts at $23.24 per hour during the probationary period, progressing to a regular rate of $30.98 per hour, reflecting the college’s recognition of experience and performance.
Working at Barnard College offers an opportunity to contribute to a community dedicated to excellence in education and fostering an inclusive atmosphere. Facilities Services personnel are part of a collaborative team that values dedication, respect, and hard work. This role is ideal for individuals who take pride in maintaining a clean and orderly environment and who want to be part of an institution committed to academic distinction and student success.
