Job Description
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is a prestigious research institution affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy. Known for its distinguished scientific achievements and association with 17 Nobel Prizes, Berkeley Lab is committed to solving complex global challenges through pioneering scientific research. Established as a leader in innovation, Berkeley Lab fosters a collaborative environment where dedicated professionals work together to advance scientific discovery across various disciplines. The laboratory values diversity, inclusion, and a culture where every employee feels they belong and can contribute meaningfully to its mission.
Berkeley Lab is currently hiring for the role of Custodian within its Facilities division. This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position with a competitive salary range of $22.50 to $34.20 per hour, depending on experience and skill level. The Custodian plays a crucial supporting role in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment throughout the laboratory premises, which enables scientific staff and researchers to operate efficiently and effectively.
Custodians at Berkeley Lab are responsible for routine cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, polishing floors, and operating floor-cleaning machinery. The role requires attention to detail to clean walls, windows, carpets, upholstery, and furniture, as well as restrooms, showers, and washrooms. Custodians also manage waste disposal by emptying trash and cleaning waste receptacles. This position demands adherence to all DOE, federal, state, and local safety, health, and environmental regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and participation in safety training and meetings.
The role requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and standing for extended periods, sometimes working at heights using elevated platforms to clean ductwork and air diffusers. Successful custodians demonstrate excellent communication skills to coordinate with supervisors, coworkers, and customers regarding work assignments and safety concerns.
Berkeley Lab supports its employees through generous benefits including exceptional health and retirement plans, tuition assistance programs, parental leave, and a supportive work culture. The laboratory also offers a Winter Holiday Shutdown and paid vacation and sick leave, promoting work-life balance for all staff members. Custodians work primarily on-site at Berkeley Lab's location in Berkeley, CA, during afternoon to evening shifts (2 pm to 10:30 pm), and the position is represented by the SX union for collective bargaining. In keeping with Berkeley Lab’s Stewardship Values—team science, service, trust, innovation, and respect—custodians contribute to an environment that fosters collaboration and excellence in scientific research.
