The role of Custodian (Part-time) at Huntington Place is a vital position within the facility's operational team. This role is primarily focused on maintaining overall cleanliness and orderliness throughout the venue. Reporting to the shift supervisor, the custodian plays an essential role in ensuring that all public and event spaces meet the highest standards of hygiene and presentation. Duties include the cleaning and sanitizing of restrooms, dusting and wiping furniture, floor care, and waste management, along with the setup and tear-down assistance for various meetings and events conducted at the venue. The successful candidate will contribute to sustaining the professional appearance of the facility and help create an environment that enhances the guest experience.

The custodian is also expected to handle specialized cleaning tasks involving the operation of various cleaning machines such as buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, and vacuum cleaners. Prior experience with machine operation, including floor stripping, buffing, applying sealers, and shampooing carpets, is preferred. In addition, responsibilities extend to maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, washing walls, maintaining equipment, snow or debris removal around building perimeters, and assisting with inventory control and security measures.

This part-time, hourly, non-exempt position offers a competitive wage of $20.02 per hour and is unionized under SEIU. The shift schedule is to be determined, which offers some flexibility. The position requires strong physical and mental capabilities, attention to detail, good communication skills, and a customer-oriented approach. As part of the team, custodians also support training and onboarding of new employees, fostering teamwork and maintaining department standards.

Job Duties

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms
  • bathrooms using established practices and procedure
  • clean, dust, and wipe furniture
  • sweep, mop, or vacuum floors
  • empty, clean wastebaskets and trash containers
  • empty and clean ash trays and cigarette urns
  • replace light bulbs
  • refill restroom dispensers
  • assist with the setup/teardown of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events
  • follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies
  • use as directed
  • lock and unlock assigned buildings
  • secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights
  • handle recycling materials
  • assist with inventory control and security
  • uphold department and Huntington Place standards, procedures and policies
  • assist newer employees with acclimation to the center and provide on the job demonstrations and coaching
  • additional duties and tasks as assigned
  • strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors
  • vacuum and shampoo carpets
  • use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture
  • wash walls and equipment
  • use ladders when required in work assignments
  • perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas within sixteen feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment
  • responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of equipment
  • operate machinery used for housekeeping
