Job Description
Arapahoe County government is a pivotal institution serving the community of Centennial, Colorado, and its neighboring regions. As a foundational element of local and regional government, Arapahoe County is dedicated to supporting its residents by maintaining high standards of public service and ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and overall quality of life for all who live and work within the county. This role falls under the Facilities and Fleet Management Department, specifically within the Division of Facility Operations, which is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of county government buildings and properties. Known for its commitment to transparency, fairness, and equality, Arapahoe County strives to be an employer of choice that reflects the diversity and values of its community.
The position available is an hourly, full-time Custodian role based at the county facilities in Centennial, CO, with a competitive hourly wage ranging from $19.62 to $29.41. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM, catering to the operational needs of various county buildings during evening hours. This role is essential in ensuring that all Arapahoe County facilities remain clean, sanitary, and welcoming environments for staff, visitors, and the public.
The Custodian will perform a diverse array of skilled labor duties primarily involving the custodial care of county-owned buildings. Responsibilities include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing restrooms, replenishing supplies, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures, handling waste disposal, and maintaining windows, walls, and mirrors. Flexibility and initiative are fundamental in this position due to the dynamic nature of the tasks and the need to respond promptly to service requests or facility needs as they arise.
Moreover, the Custodian will engage with building occupants and staff to address inquiries related to facility cleanliness, thereby playing a vital role in customer service within the government operations sphere. The role demands a person who can prioritize work efficiently, adapt to changing job requirements, and uphold safety standards rigorously.
This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent and at least one year of relevant custodial experience is preferred. Candidates must also pass several pre-employment checks including motor vehicle record screening, background verification, physical capability assessments, and drug testing to ensure safety and reliability. A valid Colorado Class "R" Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one shortly after hire is necessary. The position also entails ongoing compliance with state-mandated training and the flexibility to contribute during emergency events, such as winter storms, which may occur outside normal working hours.
Working conditions vary between indoor and occasional outdoor environments and include exposure to cleaning chemicals and equipment handling. The physical demands of the job are significant, requiring prolonged periods standing or walking, frequent lifting of heavy objects, use of cleaning machinery, and manual dexterity. Essential behavioral qualities include accountability, accessibility, inclusivity, and integrity, which align with Arapahoe County's organizational culture.
As an employer, Arapahoe County is committed to equal opportunity and prohibits discrimination based on legally protected characteristics. The county endeavors to accommodate applicants with disabilities and adheres to state laws regarding non-disclosure of age and educational dates during the application process. This ensures a fair, respectful, and legally compliant recruitment experience for all applicants.
