Job Description
The Salvation Army is a well-established international movement that forms an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Founded on the principles of compassion, service, and outreach, The Salvation Army operates numerous programs and facilities across the globe aimed at meeting human needs without discrimination. Among these operations is the Rich Fleming Hospitality House and Family Shelter located in Allentown, which serves as a vital community resource providing shelter and support services to individuals and families in need. The organization is deeply rooted in its mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and manifest the love of God through dedicated service to communities. This commitment is reflected in the environment, culture, and employment opportunities within the organization, where employees are recognized not only for their professional skills but also for their dedication to purpose and service.
The Custodian position at the Allentown Corps under The Salvation Army represents an essential role dedicated to ensuring that the facility remains clean, safe, and welcoming for both program participants and staff. This part-time plus position operates Monday through Friday with a schedule that may vary. The role offers a competitive hourly wage of $15.00 and is categorized as a non-exempt, grade 70 position. Employees in this role report directly to the Corps Officers and the Shelter Director. Beyond the daily operational responsibilities, working as a custodian at this Salvation Army location involves contributing to the mission by maintaining an environment that supports recovery, safety, and dignity for the underserved population it serves.
This custodial role requires an individual who can effectively manage janitorial and cleaning functions within the facility and its grounds. The custodian is responsible for snow removal during winter months, proper receipt and storage of deliveries, maintaining inventory of janitorial supplies, and providing support for special projects and events. Because the building serves vulnerable populations, safety, respect, and thoroughness are paramount. Additionally, custodians are expected to respond promptly to building operations or safety concerns and perform any related duties as assigned. The nature of the position demands a reliable, independent worker who cares deeply about supporting the organization’s mission and who has the physical capability to handle various equipment and carry out physically demanding tasks.
The Salvation Army also offers a robust benefits package to eligible employees, including generous paid time off for holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Employees may participate in a company-funded pension plan after one year of employment and gain eligibility for supplemental insurance plans such as short-term disability, AFLAC, and voluntary term life insurance. Most importantly, this job opportunity offers a chance to work with an organization dedicated to a good purpose, making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families in need. If you are someone who values compassion, respect, and community service, the Custodian position at The Salvation Army's Allentown Corps is a meaningful way to contribute to positive change while also building your career.
