Established as a women's college affiliated with Columbia University, Barnard has a rich history of empowering students through a rigorous academic curriculum and vibrant campus life. The college emphasizes fostering a supportive environment for its community, including students, faculty, and staff, ensuring that all members contribute to and benefit from an inspiring learning atmosphere. Barnard College takes pride in maintaining its academic buildings, residence halls, and campus grounds to the highest standards, reflecting its dedication to creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.

The Custodian position at Barnard College is a vital role within the Facilities Services team, responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order across academic buildings, residence halls, and outdoor spaces. This full-time role operates on a Saturday through Wednesday schedule from 4 pm to 12:30 am, with Thursdays and Fridays as regular days off. Reporting directly to the Facilities Services Custodial Shift Supervisor or a manager in a higher classification, the Custodian ensures all assigned areas are cleaned and maintained according to established standards, contributing to the overall well-being and comfort of the college community. The hourly wage starts at $23.24 during the probationary period, progressing up to $30.98 for regular rate employees, with salary determination based on various factors such as experience, qualifications, and departmental budget.

The Custodian's responsibilities include cleaning restrooms, replenishing supplies, disposing of trash and recyclables, maintaining floors, walls, and glass surfaces, and ensuring that residence hall rooms are prepared for occupancy throughout the academic year and summer months. They also may be tasked with special cleaning procedures as directed, moving furniture and equipment, assisting with snow removal during winter conditions, and coordinating work to ensure timely preparation of rooms for students. This role demands knowledge of cleaning chemicals, safety procedures, and proficiency in the use of various mechanical cleaning equipment like floor polishers, carpet extractors, and vacuum cleaners. The Custodian must exhibit organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and maintain calmness during busy or stressful events such as commencement and opening or closing ceremonies. Additionally, strong interpersonal skills are important due to frequent interaction with faculty, staff, students, and other Facilities Services teams. Respect for privacy and confidentiality is paramount since custodians may work in private offices and student residences.

Barnard College values its Facilities Services Custodians as essential contributors to the mission of the college and provides a supportive work environment, competitive wages, and opportunities for professional growth within the team.
