Job Description

The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is a prominent health care agency dedicated to promoting the health and wellness of individuals with behavioral health needs. Through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services, DMHAS aims to foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those it serves. With a strong commitment to compassionate and culturally competent care, the department continually strives to improve the quality of life for its communities.\n\nOne of the key facilities under DMHAS is the Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), located in Middletown, CT. CVH is recognized for its dedication to recovery through collaborative, trauma-informed, gender-responsive treatment. The hospital's mission focuses on providing a safe, caring environment where individuals can manage their recovery, enhance their wellbeing, and successfully reintegrate into the community. CVH represents a crucial part of Connecticut’s behavioral health system and maintains a strong emphasis on teamwork, respect, and professional excellence.\n\nCurrently, DMHAS is seeking two part-time Custodians to join the Addiction Services Division's housekeeping team at Connecticut Valley Hospital. The shifts available include a 32-hour workweek, primarily on the second shift with hours from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm Monday through Friday, and a modified schedule of 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This opportunity provides candidates with a chance to contribute to a meaningful mission while enjoying a healthy work-life balance and professional development in a supportive environment.\n\nThe Custodian role at CVH involves a variety of essential duties aimed at maintaining the cleanliness and safety of patient and non-patient areas throughout the facility. Responsibilities include performing a full spectrum of custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors using appropriate custodial equipment, including floor polishers and buffers. Custodians will be responsible for managing linens by collecting soiled linen and distributing clean items across the hospital, as well as disposing of trash and recycling in the designated disposal containers.\n\nAdditionally, the role encompasses cleaning of patient areas, offices, common spaces, windows, vents, and other critical surfaces. Custodians must be knowledgeable in the safe use of cleaning chemicals and maintain compliance with safety protocols. Minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, replacing fuses, lubricating door hinges, and reporting repair needs are also part of the job. This variety of duties requires physical stamina, agility, and attention to detail to ensure the hospital environment remains orderly, sanitary, and welcoming for patients, staff, and visitors.\n\nDMHAS encourages professionals who are committed to providing excellent service in a healthcare setting and who have the ability to work as part of a collaborative team to apply for these positions. The hospital supports continuous learning opportunities and is dedicated to helping its employees grow within their careers. Applicants should be prepared for a comprehensive medical examination and drug screening following a conditional job offer to ensure compliance with Connecticut’s Policy for a Drug-Free Workplace.\n\nIn summary, this role is ideal for individuals seeking a rewarding and stable part-time job within a respected state healthcare institution that values teamwork, professional integrity, and the opportunity to make a positive difference in patients’ lives. Working at Connecticut Valley Hospital as a Custodian offers candidates the chance to engage in meaningful work while benefiting from a supportive organizational culture that prioritizes health, safety, and employee wellbeing.
