The Custodian 3 position is a full-time role designed to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and sanitary conditions across district facilities. The role is situated at the Joyce Focht Instructional Support Center in Wichita, Kansas, with a typical schedule of 40 hours per week during daytime shifts across a 260-day calendar year. The position carries a salary range of $17.71 to $19.55 per hour, within Range E, and includes benefits such as health coverage and paid time off.
In this role, the custodian is responsible for a wide array of cleaning and maintenance duties that ensure school buildings and campus areas remain welcoming and functional. Duties include routine cleaning such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, waste removal, restroom servicing, and equipment maintenance. Beyond daily tasks, custodians perform weekly and occasional functions including floor buffing, carpet cleaning, light bulb replacement, and energy management functions. The position also entails supervising part-time or temporary custodial staff, coordinating with supervisors to meet school activity needs, and responding promptly to maintenance and cleaning requests.
The custodian must be capable of operating various cleaning and maintenance equipment, including floor waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, and power mowers, and also possess basic technology skills to handle SMART boards, iPads, and other office equipment. Physical demands require the ability to work in diverse weather conditions, handle cleaning chemicals safely, and meet physical capacity requirements involving lifting, bending, climbing, and pushing.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- completion of proficiency of custodial operations certificate preferred
- ability to communicate verbally and in writing

- ability to meet physical capacity profile including lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally

Job Duties
- Perform daily duties in assigned areas including dusting all flat surfaces
- empty wastebaskets
- empty pencil sharpeners
- sweep floors
- straighten desks
- mop and/or spot mop
- clean equipment and replace supplies
- clean and service restrooms
- sweep assigned hallways, stairs and landings
- lower flag if necessary
- clean gym, locker room and auditorium
- assist with lunch room clean-up
- perform weekly duties including buffing, high dusting, carpet spotting, replace light bulbs as needed, strip, seal and wax floors, wash walls and furniture, clean carpets
- perform energy management functions such as turning off day lights and turning on night lights, turn off water in urinals, unplug water fountains
- consult with Building Custodial Supervisor on school activities and cleaning needs
- respond to office and staff requests including set-up of TV, DVR, audio systems
- report building maintenance and supply needs
- secure assigned areas by checking windows, doors, and lights before leaving
- remove marks from floors and graffiti from walls
- spray buff hard surface floors
- perform recycling duties
- respond to emergencies appropriately
