Job Description
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a global religious organization dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and serving its members and communities worldwide. With a mission to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion, the Church operates numerous facilities that provide places for worship, teaching, learning, and sacred ordinances. The Church values employees who use their unique talents and skills to support this mission in meaningful ways. As an employer, the Church is an equal opportunity organization that welcomes qualified applicants without discrimination and provides reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Employment is open exclusively to members of the Church who are worthy of a temple recommend, ensuring a committed and spiritually aligned workforce that furthers the Church's goals. This intermediate-level, individual contributor role plays a vital part in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Church’s facilities, enabling an environment conducive to spiritual and community activities.
The Custodian position is designed to eliminate distractions and maintain assigned areas in a clean, sanitized, and orderly condition. This role may include duties related to groundskeeping, special events, or other manual labor tasks as needed. The custodian operates a wide range of mechanized cleaning equipment, such as vacuums, polishers, buffers, large scrubbers, sweepers, and power washers, ensuring thorough cleaning of offices, restrooms, public areas, carpets, rugs, upholstery, and drapes. Responsibilities extend to operating balers, shredders, aerial lifts, and forklifts, as well as exterior window and building cleaning. The position requires performing emergency cleanup tasks, managing waste and trash disposal, restocking supplies, moving furniture and equipment, and keeping outdoor areas free of leaves or snow. On-call responsibilities and executive VIP support duties may also be assigned.
This role requires the ability to work independently under general supervision and handle moderately complex cleaning tasks while referring more complicated issues to higher-level staff. Physical stamina and the capability to work in potentially damp, dusty, or dirty environments, using commercial-grade cleaners and chemicals safely, are essential. The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and the ability to comprehend instructions communicated verbally and in writing in English. Certification in the use of cleaning machinery and equipment is required, as is adherence to safety and chemical handling regulations. Preferred qualifications include a working knowledge of custodial responsibilities, about two years of related experience, and experience with project work or executive cleaning. The role may require working outdoors in various weather conditions, possessing a valid driver’s license, and passing a criminal background check.
By joining the Church’s facilities team, custodians contribute to creating spiritual environments that support members and visitors, helping the organization fulfill its sacred mission. This position offers meaningful work with opportunities to apply specialized cleaning skills in a supportive, faith-centered work setting, and it embodies the Church’s values of service, stewardship, and excellence.
