The role of Custodial Worker at FIU involves performing a broad array of custodial duties to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment across a wide range of campus facilities. This essential position contributes directly to the comfort, health, and safety of the university community by ensuring all types of building spaces and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned using the proper procedures, chemicals, and equipment. Custodial workers handle everything from routine cleaning tasks to specialized heavy project cleaning such as floor stripping, waxing, carpet shampooing, and pressure cleaning. The role requires operation of diverse cleaning and floor care equipment, as well as the proper management of custodial supplies and equipment. Custodial staff are responsible for key security tasks including the proper use of master keys to access assigned areas securely.
In addition to indoor cleaning duties, the custodial worker is tasked with maintaining the cleanliness of exterior areas within 10 feet of buildings, including patios, walkways, balcony spaces, and staircases. They are also expected to respond to emergencies, participate in weekend rotations, and be available for overtime during special projects, university events, and emergencies such as hurricanes or storms. Safety is paramount in this role, and custodial workers must adhere to all safety guidelines, use personal protective equipment, and follow proper handling of hazardous chemicals and waste materials. This position often requires flexible working hours, including evenings and sometimes holidays, with scheduled shifts from 5:00 PM to 1:30 AM or 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM.

Job Requirements
- Completion of the ninth (9th) grade
- Ability to work with cleaning chemicals, liquid, solid waste and soiled material
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and at locations outside of the University
- May be required to work on University holidays
- Shift may vary according to departmental needs

Job Qualifications

- Collects and transports refuse including solid waste and recyclables

- Performs heavy project cleaning including floor stripping, waxing, carpet shampooing, and pressure cleaning
- Responds to emergency calls and participates in emergency preparedness activities
