Job Description

The Langley Inn, located on Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, is a welcoming lodging facility that serves transient personnel and their families. As part of the military installation, the Inn plays a crucial role in providing comfortable and accessible accommodations for service members who are away from their permanent homes. The Inn is committed to offering a clean, safe, and pleasant environment through various services designed to meet the needs of its guests swiftly and efficiently. This includes housekeeping, maintenance, and guest services that ensure every visitor experiences homelike comfort during their stay at Langley AFB.

The Langley Inn is seeking a dedicated and flexible Custodial Worker who will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of guest rooms, corridors, stairways, and other assigned areas within the lodging facility. This position is classified as intermittent with the possibility of being scheduled up to 40 hours per week, though the actual commitment is flexible and not guaranteed beyond a minimum of zero hours. This unique work schedule offers employees the opportunity to tailor their availability to accommodate other personal or professional commitments while contributing valuable service to the Inn's operations.

As a Custodial Worker, the incumbent will perform a range of cleaning tasks that are vital to the upkeep and presentation of the lodging facility. Duties include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors using a variety of equipment such as brooms, lightweight vacuum cleaners, and floor scrubbers. The role also involves dusting, polishing furniture, cleaning and sanitizing guest room appliances, and managing waste collection and linen services. Guests' comfort and safety depend heavily on the quality and thoroughness of these custodial services, making this position integral to the Inn's success.

Physical effort is a significant aspect of this role. The work often requires standing, bending, stooping, and reaching for extended periods, along with lifting and pushing items that can weigh up to 100 pounds. The work is generally performed indoors within a well-lit and heated environment, but at times may involve outdoor tasks. Employees must be prepared to handle occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals, disagreeable odors, and minor physical injuries such as cuts or bruises.

This role demands attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently while following oral and written instructions accurately. The successful candidate will need to communicate effectively with supervisors to report maintenance issues and ensure supply levels are adequate. Digital update of room statuses and occupancy through telephone systems is also required, illustrating the integration of basic technology skills in everyday tasks.

The position offers an hourly wage of $17.34 and falls under the NA-1 pay scale with no promotion potential. It is a permanent appointment type within the competitive federal service and is not subject to union representation. While the position does not require a security clearance, a suitability fitness background check is mandatory, alongside compliance with all federal employment eligibility requirements. This job is open to all U.S. citizens and legal residents who meet the eligibility criteria outlined by the agency.

Working at Langley Inn gives employees the opportunity to contribute to the morale, welfare, and recreation activities of the Air Force and Space Force by ensuring that transient personnel have a clean and welcoming place to rest. It supports a mission-driven environment focused on service and community, coupled with the flexibility that appeals to many looking for non-traditional work schedules in a stable federal position. Candidates passionate about public service and supporting the military community are encouraged to apply.
