Job Description
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a distinguished not-for-profit corporation responsible for the real estate development and property management of the Brooklyn Navy Yard on behalf of the City of New York. Established with a mission to foster innovation and growth, BNYDC cultivates an environment that enables innovative companies to thrive and expand within this historic and vibrant industrial park. The organization places a strong emphasis on sustainability, community engagement, and smart urban development, making it a leader in managing one of the most dynamic industrial hubs in New York City. With a commitment to excellence, BNYDC provides a unique blend of historic preservation and modern infrastructure, supporting a diverse mix of tenants that range from tech startups to manufacturing firms.
The Custodial Services Supervisor role at BNYDC is a vital full-time, non-exempt position within the Property Management department. Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Custodial Services, the supervisor oversees a dedicated team of frontline custodial staff responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of BNY facilities. This role is pivotal in fostering a motivated and productive work environment. The Custodial Services Supervisor manages over 15 laborers, ensuring that all custodial assignments are executed efficiently and to the highest standard. The position offers a structured schedule with shifts from Sunday 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Monday through Thursday from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
This supervisory role demands a hands-on leader who excels in people management, operational oversight, and facility upkeep. The individual is charged with mentoring staff, facilitating training and professional growth opportunities, and supporting administrative duties related to custodial services and facility initiatives. Key responsibilities include staff scheduling, timekeeping, resolving employee and tenant issues, conducting building inspections, monitoring maintenance closets, and ensuring safety compliance throughout operations.
Additionally, the Custodial Services Supervisor will play an essential role in coordinating and supporting special events within the Yard, which can number upwards of 250 annually. This includes overseeing event setups and breakdowns and managing the logistics of moving substantial furniture and equipment. The role also requires the ability to respond swiftly to urgent situations such as snow removal, water leaks, and outages, ensuring minimal disruption to the facility’s operations.
Candidates for this position must demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, excellent communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and a meticulous approach to organizational and asset management. Physical stamina is also critical, as lifting and moving 50-plus pounds is regularly required. The successful supervisor will maintain a positive and productive atmosphere in a fast-paced environment while driving the custodial team to meet and exceed performance expectations.
Working at BNYDC means being part of an inclusive community dedicated to sustainable urban redevelopment and operational excellence. The Custodial Services Supervisor contributes not only to maintaining facilities but also to the broader mission of supporting innovative businesses and facilitating economic growth in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This role offers meaningful opportunities for professional development, leadership, and making a tangible impact in one of New York City's most esteemed industrial districts.
