The Culinary Worker II position at Worcester Dining Commons is an integral role responsible for performing routine manual and domestic tasks in the food service operation. This full-time, onsite position involves cooking, cleaning, and serving food to ensure smooth daily food service operations. As a Culinary Worker II, the individual will be required to prepare large quantities of food by following recipes and standard operating procedures, including performing display cooking when assigned. The role requires proficiency in preparing simple meals, assisting with more complex dishes, and maintaining the cleanliness of all kitchen and dining service areas and equipment. The worker will routinely peel, chop, wash, and cook ingredients, transport food to storage and serving areas, and assist with meal presentation.
Working from 4:30 pm to 12:30 am, potentially including weekends, evenings, and holidays, this role demands flexibility and dedication. The position is designated as essential personnel, which means the worker must be prepared to work overtime, report during delays or closures, and return between shifts as directed. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least six months of food service experience or completion of culinary certificate program
- Certification as a food handler within six months of appointment
- Ability to cook a variety of simple meals and assist with complex dishes
- Ability to perform display cooking
- Knowledge of approved sanitary methods for food handling and serving
- Knowledge of kitchen and food service equipment care and use
- Ability to use kitchen and dining room equipment
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish rapport and work effectively with diverse individuals
- Ability to read and understand recipes
- Willingness to communicate with customers
- Must be available to work 4:30 pm to 12:30 am, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
- Must be designated essential personnel and able to work overtime
- Must be able to stand for prolonged periods and handle physical demands of work.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least six months of food service experience or completion of a culinary certificate program
- Certified as a food handler within six months of employment through an approved program such as ServSafe
- Ability to cook a variety of simple meals and assist in more complex dishes
- Ability to perform display cooking
- Knowledge of approved sanitary food handling and serving methods
- Knowledge of proper care and use of kitchen, dining room, and food service equipment
- Ability to use kitchen and food service equipment effectively
- Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
- Strong interpersonal skills to establish rapport and maintain harmonious working relationships
- Ability to read and understand recipes
- Willingness to communicate with customers during display cooking.
Job Duties
- Cooks food in large quantities by following recipes and standard operating procedures
- Performs display cooking as assigned
- Reads computer generated recipes and menus for simple meal preparations
- Cleans cooking equipment, work areas, counters, floors, utensils, and dishes
- Prepares ingredients by peeling, chopping, washing, and cooking for simple dishes
- Transports food to storage and serving areas, loads food carts, and serves food
- Assists other food staff with preparation of more complex dishes
- Roasts, fries, boils, broils, and seasons meats, fish, poultry, vegetables
- Measures and mixes ingredients according to recipes
- Uses kitchen utensils and equipment to prepare soups, salads, desserts, dressings, gravies, sauces, and stews
- Operates cutlery, grinders, and slicers to prepare and portion food
- Evaluates food quality, quantity, appearance, temperature, and taste
- Stores foods in sanitary storage areas at proper temperature
- Communicates with Cook I, II, III employees about food and menu issues
- Makes coffee
- Separates and removes trash and garbage properly.
