Job Description

The Navy Culinary Specialist program is an integral part of the United States Navy's operational support system, offering a vital role in managing dining and lodging services aboard ships and shore-based facilities. These specialists ensure the well-being and morale of Navy personnel by preparing nutritious meals, planning menus, and managing food inventories and financial records. Working in a dynamic and often high-pressure environment, Culinary Specialists contribute directly to crew readiness by maintaining rigorous food safety and sanitation standards while also supporting diverse food service operations ranging from large-scale mess decks to executive dining venues. This role is essential not only for sustaining daily operations but also for special high-visibility events and protocols, guaranteeing a professional and efficient food service experience both at sea and ashore.

As a Culinary Specialist, individuals will undergo comprehensive training beginning with recruit training followed by specialized galley operations and culinary coursework. The training path includes hands-on experience in food preparation, baking, serving, and managing records, with progressive advancement opportunities available. Sailors may be selected for unique assignments such as Executive Services or Instructor duty after gaining fleet experience and demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication. This role demands a team-oriented mindset, strong communication skills, and the ability to operate safely and efficiently in fast-paced galley environments. The position offers seasonal and rotational schedules aligned with ship and base operations, providing a unique blend of career progression and service commitment within the Navy structure.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • meet age limits relevant to Navy policy
  • pass medical, vision, and dental examinations
  • meet physical fitness and body composition standards
  • pass background and character screening
  • achieve required aptitude test scores
  • eligibility for security clearance if needed
  • ability to work in fast-paced, hot environments safely

Job Qualifications

  • Eligibility to serve in the United States Navy
  • a high school diploma or equivalent for enlisted positions
  • meeting age limits as set in law and Navy policy
  • meeting medical, vision, and dental standards
  • meeting character and conduct standards including background screening
  • achieving required test scores for the program
  • eligibility for a security clearance when required
  • team orientation with good communication and customer service skills
  • solid arithmetic and record keeping ability for inventory and financial management
  • interest in culinary arts, nutrition, and food safety
  • attention to detail and ability to follow recipes, portioning, and sanitation procedures
  • ability to meet Navy enlistment standards and work safely in hot and fast-paced galley environments

Job Duties

  • Plan menus and order subsistence
  • prepare and serve meals in galleys, mess decks, and wardrooms
  • manage storerooms, inventories, and financial records
  • operate and maintain kitchen and dining spaces
  • lead food production teams and supervise sanitation and food safety
  • support executive dining services and protocol events
  • perform in flight food service duties when assigned
