Job Description
San Mateo County Event Center is a prominent public assembly facility located in San Mateo County, California. This vibrant venue hosts a wide range of events, including the celebrated San Mateo County Fair, which draws diverse audiences from across the region. Apart from the fair, the facility operates the Jockey Club, a satellite wagering venue for horse racing, along with an in-house catering and food service operation. The center is deeply committed to providing exceptional event experiences, blending entertainment, community engagement, and high-quality services. Their culinary services are an integral part of their operation, ensuring that guests enjoy memorable food and beverage experiences during their visits.
The Culinary Services Manager role at the San Mateo County Event Center is a pivotal position focused on managing and coordinating all food and beverage operations across the facility. This includes overseeing concessions, catering, and bar services, while ensuring operational excellence and superior client satisfaction. As a working manager, this role demands an entrepreneurial mindset and fiscal responsibility, as the manager is tasked with not only maintaining service quality but also driving revenue growth and cost control. The Culinary Services Manager works hands-on within a mid-sized venue environment, requiring versatility and the ability to handle multiple aspects of the food service operation, from budgeting to supervising staff.
Key responsibilities include managing all phases of concession and catering services, preparing budgets, conducting inventories, ensuring sanitation and safety compliance, and maintaining the efficiency of point of sale systems like Toast. The manager is also responsible for fostering strong client relationships by identifying needs and creating exceptional menus tailored to various events. Staffing is another critical component, requiring recruitment, training, supervision, and motivation of a diverse team comprising full-time, part-time, and temporary employees, especially during large events.
Candidates for this role are expected to bring extensive knowledge of food and beverage operations, including controls, health regulations, liquor laws, and catering practices. Experience within public assembly venues is advantageous due to the unique operational challenges such facilities present. Strong organizational skills, computer proficiency (notably Microsoft Office), and excellent communication abilities are essential. Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, are a plus but not mandatory. The candidate must be adaptable, proactive, and ready to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
In summary, the Culinary Services Manager at San Mateo County Event Center is a critical leadership role that combines hands-on management, financial oversight, and client service in a dynamic event environment. This position offers the opportunity to lead food and beverage operations for a well-respected public assembly venue and contribute to its ongoing success and reputation for excellent service.
