Job Description

Sweetgreen is a forward-thinking national restaurant brand known for its commitment to building healthier communities by connecting people to real food. Since its inception in 2007, Sweetgreen has transformed the fast food industry by offering fresh, flavorful, and responsibly sourced meals, fostering close relationships with farmers and local communities. This innovative approach emphasizes quality, sustainability, and wellness, distinguishing Sweetgreen as a leader in the fast casual dining sector. The company is deeply committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace, ensuring equal opportunity for all employees and applicants regardless of gender, race, age, or other protected characteristics. Sweetgreen also prioritizes employee growth and development, providing clear pathways for career advancement within its restaurants and corporate support centers. By joining Sweetgreen, employees become part of a larger movement that values the intersection of food, people, and purpose, contributing to a healthier future for both individuals and communities.

The Culinary Lead, known internally as the Kitchen Lead, plays a crucial role in upholding Sweetgreen's high standards of food quality and kitchen execution. Unlike traditional restaurant roles, this position focuses exclusively on the kitchen's food preparation, cooking, and presentation aspects without involving people management responsibilities such as scheduling or performance evaluations. Culinary Leads are the kitchen’s food quality experts and lead by example, showcasing skill, consistency, and dedication to craft. They utilize smart kitchen systems and tools—eschewing grills and fryers—in line with Sweetgreen's commitment to healthy cooking practices. The role requires a hands-on approach to food prep and cooking, ensuring every item meets Sweetgreen’s rigorous standards for flavor, safety, and presentation every single shift. The Culinary Lead also supports the team by offering real-time coaching and feedback, making sure food execution aligns with company expectations and helps teammates develop and excel.

In addition to overseeing food quality, Culinary Leads manage various operational aspects such as maintaining prep timing and par levels to keep the kitchen running smoothly during high-volume service. They serve as the primary advocate for food quality on shift, promptly identifying and addressing any issues to prevent disruptions. Although not people managers, Culinary Leads work closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to ensure compliance with food safety regulations, cleanliness, and overall operational excellence. This role suits individuals passionate about culinary craft, food quality, and teamwork who seek leadership responsibility without the administrative demands of managing staff. It also offers a clear career advancement path, with opportunities to become Shift Leaders and eventually General Managers within two to three years.

Sweetgreen provides competitive wages and various benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage for part-time and full-time employees, paid vacation and wellness time, parental leave, tips (where applicable), free meals on every shift, and access to a Team Member Merch Shop. Through this role, employees not only contribute to a healthier food movement but also grow their professional skills in a supportive, dynamic environment that values sustainability and community.
