Job Description

Sweetgreen is a prominent national restaurant brand committed to fostering healthier communities through a unique connection between people and real, wholesome food. Established in 2007, Sweetgreen has revolutionized the fast-food industry by focusing on fresh, flavorful offerings that are deeply rooted in relationships with farmers and local communities. The brand's mission is not only to serve great food but also to create spaces where food, people, and purpose come together harmoniously. Sweetgreen prioritizes growth and development for its employees across both its restaurants and support centers, ensuring that every team member has the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the company's success. The workplace culture at Sweetgreen emphasizes inclusivity, equal opportunity, and respect for diversity across a range of protected characteristics as required by federal, state, and local laws. The brand also actively participates in the federal E-Verify program to confirm employment eligibility, reinforcing its commitment to compliance and integrity.

The role of Culinary Lead, known internally as Kitchen Lead, is a pivotal position within Sweetgreen’s kitchen operations, primarily focused on food quality and kitchen execution. This position is distinct in that it does not involve traditional people management responsibilities such as scheduling or conducting performance reviews. Instead, the Culinary Lead is the kitchen's food quality expert, overseeing how food is prepped, cooked, and presented throughout each shift. The lead serves as a role model, exemplifying craftsmanship, consistency, and dedication to high standards. Unlike conventional restaurant kitchens featuring grills and fryers, Sweetgreen kitchens emphasize smart systems and real food prepared without flames or fryer oil, showcasing a modern and healthier approach to fast food.

In this role, the Culinary Lead will take ownership of food quality by ensuring that every dish meets Sweetgreen’s exacting standards for flavor, food safety, and presentation. The person in this role preps and cooks hot food using kitchen tools and ovens and provides immediate feedback to teammates to improve their food execution. Effective prep timing and managing par levels are key responsibilities in maintaining smooth kitchen operations amid busy periods. Furthermore, the Culinary Lead acts as the advocate for food quality during each shift, quickly identifying and resolving any issues. The role requires close collaboration with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold food safety, cleanliness, and operational excellence. Sweetgreen supports career growth through clear pathways; top-performing Kitchen Leads often advance to General Manager roles within two to three years, presenting significant opportunities for long-term career development within the company.

This position is ideal for individuals who have a passion for the kitchen environment, take pride in food quality and consistent execution, and desire leadership responsibilities without the full scope of people management. It suits those who enjoy training their peers and inspire enthusiasm about new menu launches. Experience in high-volume kitchens, whether in fast casual, quick-service restaurants, full-service, or corporate dining, is highly valued. Sweetgreen offers competitive wages, tips where applicable, medical, dental, and vision insurance options for eligible employees, paid time off including vacation and wellness days, parental leave, a free meal during every shift, 401(k) plans, and additional perks such as a Team Member Merch Shop for branded gear. This role is a critical step toward shift leader and management opportunities, making it an excellent fit for individuals seeking meaningful career progression in the food industry.
