Job Description

Sweetgreen is a nationally recognized restaurant brand dedicated to fostering healthier communities by connecting people to real, fresh food. Founded in 2007, Sweetgreen revolutionized the fast food industry by focusing on food that is fresh, flavorful, and deeply rooted in meaningful relationships with farmers and local communities. The company aims not only to provide excellent food but also to create work environments where employees can grow, thrive, and be part of a larger movement focused on health and sustainability. Sweetgreen is committed to equality and diversity, supporting an inclusive workplace that respects all people regardless of gender, age, race, religion, disability, or military service status. Beyond food, Sweetgreen is building a culture centered around community, purpose, and personal growth, offering opportunities for employees to develop professionally within their restaurants and corporate support centers.

The Culinary Lead, known internally as the Kitchen Lead, is a pivotal role within Sweetgreen's kitchen operations. This position is not a traditional people management role but focuses on being the expert of food quality and kitchen standards during each shift. As the Culinary Lead, you are responsible for ensuring that all food meets Sweetgreen's high standards of flavor, safety, and presentation. This involves overseeing the preparation and cooking of all hot food items, utilizing tools like knives and ovens, but notably without grills or fryers. The role demands leadership by example, with a strong emphasis on coaching teammates, providing real-time feedback, and maintaining consistency in all kitchen executions.

Unlike standard restaurant kitchens, Sweetgreen’s kitchens are designed with smart systems that promote efficient and hygienic food preparation without the need for traditional grilling or frying methods. The Culinary Lead plays a critical part in managing prep timing and inventory levels to keep the kitchen running fluidly during high-volume periods. You will work closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold strict food safety, cleanliness, and operational standards.

This role offers a unique leadership experience without full people management responsibilities—perfect for those who love being in the kitchen and take immense pride in food quality and consistent execution. It is an excellent step for individuals who wish to grow within the company, with top-performing Culinary Leads having clear advancement potential to become General Managers within 2 to 3 years. Sweetgreen also offers competitive wages, with additional perks including paid vacation, wellness time, parental leave, medical, dental and vision benefits, and a 401(k) plan for eligible employees. This position typically requires a commitment of at least 30 hours per week and is open to individuals authorized to work in the United States who are 18 years or older. Join Sweetgreen’s movement to rewrite the future of fast food by delivering real, wholesome meals and supporting a healthier future for all.
