Job Description
Sweetgreen is a nationally recognized restaurant brand that has been revolutionizing the fast food industry since its founding in 2007. Dedicated to building healthier communities, Sweetgreen connects people to real, fresh food sourced through strong relationships with farmers and local producers. The brand reimagines what fast food can be, focusing on fresh, flavorful meals made from wholesome ingredients without the use of traditional fast food cooking methods like grills or fryers. Sweetgreen represents not just a place to eat, but a movement toward healthier living and sustainable practices that are supported by transparent sourcing and community engagement. With a rapidly growing presence across the country, Sweetgreen is more than a restaurant—it’s an advocate for wellness and environmental stewardship. The company also prioritizes equitable opportunity, fostering an inclusive workplace that respects and celebrates diversity in all its forms. Employees find not only rewarding career opportunities but also a workplace culture that values purpose alongside performance.
The Culinary Lead position, referred to internally as Kitchen Lead, plays a vital role in this mission by serving as the food quality expert within the kitchen. This role is designed for those passionate about food craft and quality, with a focus on ensuring that each item prepared meets Sweetgreen’s high standards for flavor, presentation, and food safety. Unlike traditional restaurant kitchens, the Sweetgreen kitchen does not use grills or fryers; instead, it relies on smart systems and clean, efficient cooking techniques utilizing knives, kitchen tools, and ovens. The Culinary Lead is responsible for leading by example through hands-on preparation, coaching teammates in real-time, and maintaining consistency from the start to the end of every shift.
This role does not involve direct people management tasks such as scheduling or conducting performance reviews but is crucial for upholding operational excellence and food quality. The Culinary Lead works closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to ensure that the kitchen environment is clean, safe, and efficient, which ultimately enhances the customer dining experience. A proactive problem-solver, the Culinary Lead spots potential issues early and resolves them quickly to maintain seamless kitchen operations during busy periods. This role offers an exciting path for career growth, with top-performing Kitchen Leads often advancing to General Manager positions within 2-3 years. For individuals who take pride in culinary excellence and desire leadership responsibilities without full management duties, this position provides an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skills and contribute meaningfully to Sweetgreen’s vision for a healthier future.
