Job Description

Sweetgreen is a pioneering national restaurant brand committed to fostering healthier communities by connecting individuals to real, wholesome food. Established in 2007, Sweetgreen has revolutionized the fast-food landscape by emphasizing fresh, flavorful meals rooted in sustainable relationships with farmers and local communities. The brand is celebrated for its innovative approach to fast-casual dining, prioritizing quality, nutrition, and environmental responsibility. As a company, Sweetgreen is dedicated to the personal and professional growth of its team members, providing continuous opportunities to develop skills, leadership capabilities, and career advancement. The company embraces diversity and inclusion, ensuring equal employment opportunities regardless of any protected characteristic under federal, state, or local law. Sweetgreen also participates in the federal E-Verify program to confirm employment eligibility, reinforcing its commitment to legal and ethical hiring practices. Team members benefit from a supportive workplace culture centered around food, people, and purpose, making Sweetgreen not just a place to work but a community to belong to.

The Culinary Lead role at Sweetgreen — also referred to as the Kitchen Lead — is a pivotal position within the kitchen that focuses on food quality, execution, and consistency. Unlike traditional people manager roles, this is not a managerial position responsible for scheduling or performance reviews. Instead, the Culinary Lead serves as the food quality expert on shift, owning how food is prepped, cooked, and presented. This role requires hands-on involvement with food preparation techniques, including using knives, kitchen tools, and ovens — notably without the use of grills or fryers, aligning with Sweetgreen’s unique kitchen systems and commitment to healthy, clean cooking methods. The Culinary Lead sets the culinary standard on every shift by leading through craft, coaching, and consistency, ensuring that every food item meets Sweetgreen’s high standards for flavor, food safety, and presentation.

The Culinary Lead is instrumental in maintaining smooth kitchen operations by managing prep timing, par levels, and proactively identifying and resolving food quality issues. This role offers an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about culinary excellence who want leadership responsibility without the full burden of people management. Culinary Leads actively support teammates by providing real-time feedback to elevate food execution and collaborate closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold operational excellence, cleanliness, and food safety standards.

Moreover, this role serves as a clear stepping stone within Sweetgreen's career path, with top-performing Culinary Leads often advancing to General Manager positions within two to three years. Candidates for this role typically have experience working in high-volume kitchen environments, which may include fast casual restaurants, QSRs (quick service restaurants), full-service establishments, or corporate dining settings. Sweetgreen values individuals who are detail-oriented, proactive, and take pride in maintaining consistent food quality in a fast-paced environment. This role is perfect for culinary professionals eager to contribute to a growing brand dedicated to rewriting the future of fast food and making a lasting impact on communities through real food excellence.
