Job Description
Sweetgreen is a national restaurant brand dedicated to building healthier communities by connecting people to real food. Since its inception in 2007, Sweetgreen has revolutionized the fast food industry by focusing on fresh, flavorful food that emphasizes real ingredients sourced from trusted farmers and community partners. The company has grown into a well-respected fast casual restaurant chain that is committed to not only serving delicious meals but also to cultivating meaningful relationships with its customers, communities, and employees. With a modern approach to food preparation that excludes traditional grills and fryers, Sweetgreen embodies innovation in the culinary sector by prioritizing health, sustainability, and operational excellence. Their kitchens operate with smart systems designed to deliver high-quality food consistently and efficiently, making Sweetgreen a pioneer in redefining fast food for a healthier future.
The role of Culinary Lead, also known within Sweetgreen as Kitchen Lead, is a specialized position focused on food quality and kitchen execution rather than people management. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about culinary craft who wish to take on leadership responsibilities without the administrative duties typically involved in managing people. As a Culinary Lead, you will be the expert responsible for ensuring every dish prepared and served meets the company’s strict standards for flavor, food safety, and presentation. You will lead by example on the kitchen floor, coaching team members and maintaining consistency across shifts.
The Culinary Lead is deeply involved in hands-on food preparation, including cooking hot food to standard using kitchen tools like knives and ovens—noticeably without the use of traditional elements such as fryer oil or flames. Your role involves anticipating volume demands through effective prep timing and managing inventory levels to maintain smooth kitchen operations. Though you will not handle staffing schedules or performance reviews, you will be the go-to person for food quality on every shift, quickly identifying and resolving issues while collaborating closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold operational standards.
This position offers a clear advancement path toward roles such as Shift Leader and General Manager within 2-3 years for top performers, making it a pivotal step for career growth within Sweetgreen. Employment opportunities include competitive wages, tips (where applicable), and comprehensive benefit options for both part-time and full-time employees. As a Culinary Lead, you will join a movement to transform how fast food is made and experienced, contributing to a healthier future for communities and yourself alike.
