Job Description
Sweetgreen is a renowned national restaurant brand committed to transforming the fast-food industry by prioritizing health, freshness, and sustainability. Established in 2007, Sweetgreen has grown rapidly as a leader in the fast-casual dining segment, serving food that is not only flavorful but also responsibly sourced and rooted in strong community and farmer relationships. The company’s mission expands beyond serving high-quality meals; it aims to build healthier communities by connecting people with real food, fostering a mission-driven culture that values authenticity, innovation, and impact. Sweetgreen invests deeply in its workforce, promoting career growth and development opportunities within its restaurants and corporate support centers, making it a compelling choice for prospective employees who want to make a difference through their work.
The role of Culinary Lead, known internally at Sweetgreen as Kitchen Lead, is essential to maintaining the high standards of food quality that define Sweetgreen’s brand. This position focuses on the culinary craftsmanship and kitchen execution that ensure every dish is prepared to perfection. Unlike traditional restaurant kitchen roles, this position involves working in a modern kitchen environment without grills or fryers, relying instead on smart systems and innovative cooking methods to deliver fresh, delicious food efficiently. The Culinary Lead is not a people manager role; instead, it centers on food quality leadership—setting the standard for how food is prepped, cooked, and presented each shift. This role requires a hands-on approach with direct responsibility for upholding Sweetgreen’s expectations for flavor, food safety, and visual presentation.
Culinary Leads serve as the go-to experts in the kitchen, partnering with Shift Leaders and Managers to ensure smooth kitchen operations and operational excellence. They provide real-time coaching to kitchen teammates, helping elevate food execution and consistency while anticipating kitchen volume demands by managing prep schedules and ingredient par levels. This leadership position encourages a proactive mindset to identify and resolve quality or safety issues swiftly and efficiently. The role is ideal for individuals who thrive on precision, consistency, and teamwork but prefer to focus on the craft of cooking without managing staff directly.
Sweetgreen’s Culinary Lead role offers a distinctive career path with opportunities to advance to Shift Leader and ultimately General Manager within two to three years, highlighting the company’s commitment to internal career progression. Additionally, the company offers competitive wages, tips where applicable, and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, paid vacation and parental leave, free meals during shifts, and access to a 401(k) plan. Sweetgreen welcomes candidates with experience in high-volume kitchens such as fast-casual, quick-service restaurants, full-service establishments, or corporate dining environments. The ideal candidate values quality, consistency, and cleanliness and enjoys sharing their knowledge to motivate and train their peers.
Working at Sweetgreen means joining a movement dedicated not only to food but to culture and community impact. The company upholds inclusive hiring practices, ensuring equal opportunities regardless of gender, race, age, religion, disability, or veteran status. Employees are empowered to contribute to a mission-driven workplace that is reshaping the future of fast food by making healthy, fresh meals accessible and enjoyable. The Culinary Lead role offers a fulfilling chance to be at the heart of this transformation while building valuable skills and advancing one’s culinary career in a forward-thinking, supportive environment.
