Job Description

Sweetgreen is a national restaurant brand dedicated to building healthier communities by connecting people to real food. Established in 2007, Sweetgreen is a pioneering force in reimagining fast food with a focus on fresh, flavorful meals that are rooted in strong relationships with farmers and local communities. The company is committed not just to delivering high-quality food but also fostering a workplace culture built on diversity, inclusion, and continuous growth opportunities for all team members. Sweetgreen’s innovative approach eliminates traditional fast food obstacles, emphasizing smart kitchen systems and real food prepared properly without the use of grills or fryers. With a growing footprint nationwide, Sweetgreen is driven by purpose — connecting food, people, and community to create healthier futures. The brand also provides equal employment opportunities, ensuring an inclusive environment free from discrimination of any kind, and participates actively in federal employment eligibility programs to promote lawful hiring practices.

The Culinary Lead position at Sweetgreen, known internally as the Kitchen Lead, is a critical role focused on food quality and kitchen execution without the responsibilities of formal people management. This position is ideal for someone passionate about food preparation, presentation, and maintaining high standards across every shift. The Culinary Lead is responsible for ensuring that all items meet Sweetgreen’s exacting standards for flavor, safety, and appearance. They bring expertise to food prep and cooking using knives, kitchen tools, and ovens, all while avoiding traditional methods such as frying or grilling. The role centers on leadership through craft and coaching with an emphasis on real-time feedback for continuous team improvement. The Kitchen Lead works closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold the highest levels of cleanliness, food safety, and operational excellence.

Unlike typical kitchen roles, this position offers the chance to develop leadership skills without the complexities of direct people management such as scheduling or performance reviews, making it an excellent stepping stone for anyone aspiring to progress to General Manager roles within 2-3 years. Sweetgreen values Kitchen Leads who are proactive, detail-oriented, and passionate about delivering an outstanding food experience to guests. The role requires balancing multiple tasks including managing prep timing, spotting quality issues early, and ensuring smooth kitchen operations in high-volume, fast-paced environments like fast casual or quick service restaurants. The company compliments this role with competitive wages and benefits, including tips where applicable, paid vacation and wellness time, medical and dental coverage, a free meal every shift, and opportunities for career growth. Sweetgreen offers a family-friendly atmosphere with paid parental leave and a supportive team environment where employees can earn branded merchandise and participate in a forward-thinking food movement. Overall, this role invites motivated culinary professionals to join a movement not only to redefine fast food, but also to build a personal career path within an innovative, community-driven organization.
