Job Description
Sweetgreen is a well-established national restaurant brand that has been dedicated to transforming the fast food industry since its inception in 2007. With a focus on building healthier communities, Sweetgreen connects people to real, fresh, and flavorful food rooted in meaningful relationships with farmers and local communities. Their innovative approach reimagines how fast food can be enjoyable, nutritious, and socially responsible at the same time. As an expanding organization, Sweetgreen values the growth and development of its employees across its network of restaurants and corporate support centers, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can contribute to the movement toward healthier living. The company emphasizes equal opportunity employment and is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all applicants and employees are treated fairly regardless of gender, race, age, disability, or other protected characteristics. Sweetgreen also complies with federal employment verification programs such as E-Verify to maintain regulatory standards.
The role of Culinary Lead, also known internally as Kitchen Lead, is a pivotal position within Sweetgreen's restaurant operations. This role is highly specialized, focusing specifically on food quality and kitchen execution without the responsibilities of direct people management such as scheduling or performance reviews. Culinary Leads serve as food quality experts in the kitchen, owning how ingredients are prepped, cooked, and presented during every shift. Unlike conventional restaurant kitchens, Sweetgreen kitchens do not use high-temperature equipment like grills or fryers, instead operating with smart systems and innovative kitchen tools that emphasize healthy and consistent food preparation. The Culinary Lead’s responsibilities include ensuring that all food items meet Sweetgreen's rigorous standards for flavor, safety, and presentation, as well as coaching teammates to improve their food execution in real time.
Beyond maintaining high-quality food standards, Culinary Leads manage operational aspects such as prep timing, inventory levels (par levels), and smoothly navigating volume fluctuations during service. They act as advocates for food quality, quickly identifying and resolving issues during shifts. Collaboration with Shift Leaders and Managers is essential to uphold not only food safety and cleanliness but also overall operational excellence within the kitchen environment. This position offers a clear career pathway for motivated individuals interested in advancing to Shift Leader or General Manager roles within two to three years. Sweetgreen's work culture promotes leadership without full people management duties, allowing Culinary Leads to develop valuable leadership skills centered on craft, consistency, and coaching.
Joining Sweetgreen as a Culinary Lead means becoming part of a movement to rewrite the future of fast food—prioritizing health, sustainability, and community impact. This role is ideal for those who are passionate about kitchen craftsmanship, food quality, and training peers in a fast-paced, high-volume setting typical of fast casual or quick service restaurants. It requires physical stamina, attention to detail, food safety knowledge, and a genuine pride in creating clean kitchen execution. Sweetgreen supports team members with competitive wages, tip opportunities (depending on role and location), medical, dental, and vision benefits for both part-time and full-time employees, paid vacation and parental leave, free meals during shifts, 401(k) options, and merchandise rewards. These benefits reflect Sweetgreen’s commitment to supporting its workforce and encouraging long-term career growth within the company.
