The Culinary Lead role, referred to internally as Kitchen Lead at Sweetgreen, is crucial to maintaining the company’s high standards for food quality and operational excellence. As the food quality expert on shift, the Culinary Lead ensures that every dish prepared, cooked, and presented meets Sweetgreen’s exacting standards for flavor, presentation, and food safety. Unlike many fast food kitchens, Sweetgreen’s culinary environment is free from grills and fryers, showcasing a healthier and cleaner method of food preparation using smart systems and kitchen tools like knives and ovens.

The Culinary Lead is responsible for overseeing kitchen execution during shifts, setting quality standards and helping teammates improve their skills through real-time feedback. This role involves managing prep timing and inventory levels to ensure smooth kitchen flow and operational efficiency. The Culinary Lead collaborates closely with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold food safety protocols, cleanliness, and overall operational excellence. Additionally, the role serves as a stepping stone toward higher leadership positions within Sweetgreen, with top-performing Kitchen Leads often progressing to General Manager roles within two to three years.

Job Requirements

  • Meet all physical requirements for all roles within the Kitchen Lead career path, including Team Member
  • Comfortable working on your feet
  • Maintain attention to detail and environmental awareness during operations
  • Use touch to assess quality and complete detail-oriented tasks
  • Routinely handling items up to 5-25 lbs, and occasionally handling items 40-50 lbs
  • Food safety knowledge (Food Handler or ServSafe certification)
  • Able to follow food safety, cleanliness, and quality standards
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 30 hours per week
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Job Qualifications

  • Experience in high-volume kitchens (fast casual, QSR, full service, or corporate dining)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to provide real-time feedback and coaching
  • Knowledge of food safety standards
  • Passion for food quality and consistency
  • Interest in leadership without full people management duties

Job Duties

  • Own food quality by ensuring every item meets sweetgreen's standards for flavor, food safety, and presentation
  • Prep and cook hot food to standard using knives, kitchen tools, and ovens (no flames, no fryer oil)
  • Help teammates improve food execution through real-time feedback
  • Stay ahead of volume by managing prep timing and par levels to keep the kitchen running smoothly
  • Be the advocate for food quality on shift, spotting issues early and fixing them fast
  • Partner with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold food safety, cleanliness, and operational excellence
