Job Description

Sweetgreen is a national restaurant brand dedicated to building healthier communities by connecting people to real food. Established in 2007, Sweetgreen has revolutionized the fast food industry by offering fresh, flavorful meals rooted in strong relationships with farmers and local communities. With a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, Sweetgreen continues to grow across the United States, providing opportunities for career development within their restaurants and support centers. As a company, Sweetgreen values inclusion and equal opportunity, embracing diversity in all its forms without regard to gender, age, race, religion, or disability. They actively participate in federal programs like E-Verify to confirm employment eligibility and ensure fair hiring practices.

The role of Culinary Lead, known internally as Kitchen Lead, is pivotal in Sweetgreen's commitment to food excellence. This position focuses exclusively on food quality and execution within the kitchen, rather than managing staff schedules or performance reviews. As the Culinary Lead, you serve as the food quality expert during each shift, owning how food is prepped, cooked, and presented to ensure Sweetgreen’s high standards are consistently met. This role is ideal for someone passionate about culinary craft, guiding teammates through coaching and real-time feedback to maintain food consistency and safety.

Unlike traditional restaurant kitchens, Sweetgreen’s kitchen environment does not include grills or fryers. Instead, the focus is on using smart systems, knives, kitchen tools, and ovens to prepare hot food in a clean, efficient way. The Culinary Lead must be proactive in managing prep timing and inventory levels to keep operations running smoothly, spotting and resolving food quality issues quickly. This position works collaboratively with Shift Leaders and Managers to uphold all food safety, cleanliness, and operational standards.

Sweetgreen offers a supportive path for Culinary Leads who demonstrate strong performance, with clear opportunities to advance to General Manager roles within 2-3 years. This role is an excellent opportunity for an individual who loves being in the kitchen, values food quality and consistency, and desires leadership responsibility without the demands of full people management. Benefits include competitive wages, tips (where applicable), medical, dental, and vision options for eligible team members, paid vacation, wellness time, parental leave, free meals, 401(k) plans, and more.

By joining Sweetgreen as a Culinary Lead, you become part of a movement dedicated to rewriting the future of fast food. This means not only growing your own career but also helping to create healthier communities through real food and meaningful connections. It’s a role that blends passion for culinary excellence, teamwork, and a commitment to operational excellence – all in a dynamic, fast-paced, high-volume setting.
